John Moquin Obituary

Athens John William "Jack" Moquin, 64 of Athens, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, with family by his side, after a valiant three-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born on November 28, 1958, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Jack was the son of William Henry Moquin and the late Mary Elizabeth Kinzel Strang. At the age of 11, Jack and his family relocated to Ohio, where he would leave an indelible mark on the community he came to call home.

After graduating from Morgan High School in 1977, Jack pursued his passion for serving others by obtaining an Associate's Degree in Mortuary Science from the prestigious Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1986. Jack excelled while in mortuary school as he graduated with The Ohio Embalmers Association Lester W. Wakeham Award, recognizing his excellence in the combined practice and theory of embalming. With over 40 years of experience in the funeral and embalming profession, Jack established himself as a pillar of compassion and professionalism in the industry and was an active member of the Ohio Funeral Director's Association & The Ohio Embalmers Association. His dedication and commitment led him to become the owner and operator of Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, a cherished institution where he provided solace to countless grieving families. In addition to his work in funeral services, Jack selflessly served as a Medicolegal Death Investigator for the Athens County Coroner's Office for over a decade. His expertise and attention to detail were invaluable in ensuring justice and closure were brought to those whose lives had unexpectedly ended.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Jack possessed a deep love for sports. He was an ardent supporter of the Cincinnati Bengals, Michigan Wolverines, and Ohio University Football programs. As a devoted season ticket holder for Ohio Football, Jack not only cheered on his favorite team but also organized joyous tailgate parties for family and friends. Known for his culinary skills, he thrived behind the grill, delighting those around him with his mouthwatering creations. He loved teaching his children and grandchildren his many cooking secrets during the multiple family cookouts he organized. Jack also found solace and joy in the great outdoors, relishing his time spent hunting, camping, fishing, and surrounded by the natural beauty he cherished. Jack's legacy of love and devotion extends far beyond his professional and recreational endeavors.

He leaves behind a grieving but grateful family, including his beloved wife of over 30 years, Alecia Ann Moquin. Jack will forever be remembered as a dedicated and loving father to his children, Jacki Darnell (Scott) Wallace, Weston Henri (Brittanie) Moquin, Danielle Marie Andrews, and Timothy Vance (Breanna) Moquin. He was a proud and adoring grandfather to Savannah and Lincoln Wallace, Brylee and Bristol McAngus, and Emersyn, Ripley, and Annabelle Moquin. Jack was also a dear brother to Jeannie Guinn, Donna Balazovic, and Amy Jenema, and a friend to many who were fortunate enough to know him closely.

Besides his mother, Jack is preceded in death by his dear friend, Charles W. "Charlie" McClain, 2021.

In the midst of mourning their loss, the family finds solace in the cherished memories they shared with Jack. They would like to extend a special thank-you to the compassionate staff at OSU The James Cancer Center, OhioHealth O'Bleness Hospital, OhioHealth Hospice, and the dedicated first responders & friends who tirelessly supported and cared for Jack during his final days. The outpouring support from the community during his battle with cancer is forever cherished by the Moquin Family.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the funeral home Jack dedicated his entire life to, Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home. Friends and loved ones are invited to join the family for the funeral services, which will take place 11AM on Friday, November 17, 2023, followed by a burial at Clarks Chapel Cemetery. Pastor Phil Foster will officiate the service, providing comforting words of remembrance and reflection. The family welcomes all who wish to pay their respects to visit the funeral home Thursday, November 16, 2023 from 2PM - 4PM & 6PM - 8PM. Your presence and support during this difficult time would be greatly appreciated.

In honoring Jack's life, we remember a kind and sincere individual who left an indelible mark on the lives he touched. May his memory serve as a guiding light, reminding us to cherish our loved ones, embrace life's joys, and lend a helping hand to those in need. Jack's legacy of compassion, integrity, and love will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Those unable to attend services are encouraged to sign the online guestbook or view a memorial tribute video of Jack's life at www.hughesmoquinfuneralhome.com. John William "Jack" Moquin

Just read in a funeral publication that Jack had passed. Jack and I were classmates at Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and both graduated in 1986. My name is Bartley Willim. He was a great guy. Our obituaries could be almost the same. I lost my mom to pancreatic cancer. May God bless you. We had a great time in college together.

I am so sorry to hear of Jack's passing. He was a compassionate man who has been there for countless families in their time of need. He has served our family for many years, both of my grandparents, my father and my little cousin.

We had many long distant conversations as I lived in Connecticut at the time regarding the plans of my own own funeral and service. His ability to explain every detail and answer all of my questions and give me the piece of mind I am eternally grateful for.

My sincerest sympathy to his wife, children, grandchildren abd all those who loved and respected him for being the exemplary man he was.

Rest In Paradise Jack

I just found out today about Jack’s passing on the OFDA website. I sure would have come to Athens to support the family had I known in time.
Jack was always a pleasure to call on as a customer. He always took the time to visit and was never unavailable. His fight through this battle was remarkable and I know he and his family gave it their all until the end.
Please know you are all in my thoughts.

I am so so sorry for your loss. Losing Jack is a big loss for all of Athens. He helped me through so many family funerals and his help was so appreciated. We had a mutual joking criticism of each other for years and he could always lighten my mood during family losses. Loved him like a brother. Best wishes for his family at this time of loss. God bless

Bob and I are so sorry for your loss. Jack was an amazing community member and contributed his skills and compassion to so many. He was also a wonderful dog owner. We had a dog Lady who would love to romp with your dog in your yard. Those spontaneous fun visits with Jack as our dogs romped in your yard were so fun. Blessings to you during this distressing and tender time of grieving and celebrating his many admirable skills, traits and contributions to his family and community. Grateful for his impressive life. Sending all my love and many hugs to all of you. Jack was so much to so many. Over the years he became my husbands best friend and brother. I think they spent more time together than we did before Charlie passed. But that was okay with me, they enjoyed each others company and had so much in common. Jack was someone with a huge heart even though he seemed quiet. He would do anything for you at any time day or night. Family, cherish your memories. Look back at videos and pictures. That is all we have left here of our loved ones but in our heart they will forever be. That can never be taken away from us. I pray for strength and comfort for all of you. I am just a phone call away. He is watching over you all and the blessing is, he is free of cancer and pain. I love you all so very much. Family forever

My heartfelt sympathy to Alecia, his family, and close friends! I appreciated his friendship and professional service/care while planning and arranging my late husband's (Dr. William Carlson's) funeral service in 1995. I especially felt secure because he only had my children's and my best interests at heart. I continued to see him occasionally while exercising at the Athens Community Center and he always had a friendly "hello" to offer. Athens has indeed lost a fine and helpful member of our community!
