He is a direct descendant of Isaac Lines, who joined the military forces of General James Edward Oglethorpe at Fort Frederica, St. Simons Island, Georgia, to defeat the Spanish in the "Battle of Bloody Marsh" in 1742. Alva B. Lines has devoted his extraordinary life to serving his family, community, profession, and country. A Savannah native and a graduate of Savannah High School, he left a well-paying job during the Great Depression to pursue his goal of higher education, joining a small group of forward-thinking young adults who graduated at Armstrong Junior College in the first class of 1935. Recently, Armstrong Atlantic State University conferred an Honorary Doctor of Letters on 1937 alumnus Alva B. Lines. Following his graduation, Alva enrolled at Emory University in Atlanta, completing his bachelor's degree in 1939. He settled in Atlanta and married Mildred Jessie Rand in 1940. He was married to his wonderful wife for 73 years. They started their family, and then World War ll began. He enlisted and served as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps, earning two Battle Stars and the Bronze Medal for his service under Gen. Douglas McArthur in Australia, New Guinea, and the Dutch East Indies during World War ll. After the war, Alva returned to Atlanta and his family. He founded Southeastern Films, specializing in film production for television. He became a pioneering filmmaker and among the first in his generation to film documentaries that focused on science, medical, and life stories of Atlanta leaders of the time. Rising to the top of his profession, he served as chairman of the Society of Motion Pictures and TV Engineers of Georgia. His civic activities included membership in the Rotary Club, which recognized him for more than 26 years of perfect attendance, and he served as director of the Atlanta Boys Club. In 1978, he received broad community recognition when he was named an Outstanding Atlantan. Alva was a lifetime member of Capital City Club and also a member of St. Philip's Cathedral for 76 years. Alva B. Lines is responsible for the 1976 victory, when the Supreme Court of Georgia decided that Title to Georgia's beaches and marshlands belong to the people of the State of Georgia. This decision not only gives all Georgians rights of access, but also means our marshes and beaches will be preserved and protected for future generations. This case was also won and reaffirmed in the Supreme Court of The United States. Alva B. Lines' legacy is to encourage all Georgians never to allow this right to be taken away! Alva B. Lines served his family well. His memory will be cherished by us all. Praise Jesus for a life well served! Visitation with the family at 1:00 pm and the service begins at 2:00 pm on Monday, May 6, 2013 at The Cathedral of St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, GA. 30305. Contributions in memory of the great accomplishments that he made for all Georgians can be made to the St. Simons Island Land Trust at http://www.sslt.org, to preserve St. Simons' natural and scenic character for the benefit of Georgians.
