Anne Meyer Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

Anne Heineman Meyer, 80, died Sunday, June 12. She was the wife of the late Sylvan Meyer, former editor of The Daily Times of Gainesville, Georgia, where she passed away. He was also editor of The Miami News and publisher of South Florida Magazine. As he would have been the first to acknowledge, she was instrumental in every achievement. Our wonderful, brilliant mother went from Shaping "women's page" coverage in that small daily newspaper in the 1950s to working many years as a radio talk show host in Miami, where she was known for her warm, intelligent interviews. She chaired the Channel 2 Auction, the Miami Beach Commission on the Status of Women and the Florida Commission on the Status of Women, among many other civic and cultural leadership roles. She was also a member of the founding board of the Miami City Ballet. A Holocaust survivor who fled Mainz, Germany, on the last Kindertransport, she cherished America and the Democratic Party. She loved reading, movies, Broadway and television, the ocean and the mountains, cruise ships and Tuscany, and most of all, her many friends and her family. She told marvelous stories in rich detail and wit, was known for her compassion and thoughtfulness, and had a keen sense of beauty and a flawless memory all her life. She is survived by her three children: Erica (and Alan) Rauzin of Miami Beach, David N. Meyer II, of New York City and Ketchum, Idaho, and Jason (and Tracy) Meyer, of Pennington, New Jersey, and her grandchildren, Dara, Amelia and Daniel Rauzin, and Robinson, Grady and Sullivan Meyer. She is also survived by her sister, Joan Heineman Banov, of Glen Cove, New York; her brother and sister-in-law, Janet and Lennie Meyer of Atlanta, and her niece and nephews, Beverly Banov Brown of Pennsylvania, Scott Meyer and Roger Meyer of Nevada, and Richard Meyer of Atlanta. Donations in her memory can be made to the Atlanta Jewish Community Center, for Camp Barney Medintz, or to the Ahavath Achim Synagogue. Ward's Funeral Home of Gainesville, GA.

The first time I saw Anne Meyer was when she was in process of creatng the Commission on the Status of Women of Miami Beach and was serving as its first chairerson. She went on to chair the Florida State Commission on the Status of Women, to help to make the Channel Two Public television station a living reality and to cooperate in so many other civic and professional journalistic endeavors. She had charm and wit and could also be practical and earthy. She is on my list, and I'm sure is the same in the minds of many other people, as a terrific force for good in the world for all of her life. It was always a pleasure to be a member of her circle of friends. My husband joins me in sending best wishes to all of the children and grandchildren. In both of your parents you have something especially inspiring to live up to for all of your lives and to remember with love.

In the early 1980's, I managed WQAM Radio in Miami. Anne was one of the most pleasant persons that I ever had the opportunity to work with in my entire career. Her interviewing skills were the best, and she had some of the finest and most interesting people on her program. Anne was a sincere, unselfish, warm person who was loved by all.

It was a sincere privilege to work with her. Anne was a very special lady who left the world a better place to be. She will be missed.
