In addition to his superb musical accomplishments (I used to weep every year when he played "Carol of the Birds" on the Christmas program), I remember Chris's devotion to visual art. When the ASO and Chorus took its European tour in 1988, he did a series of watercolors of some of the sites we encountered. When the ASO Symphony Store later offered a set of reproductions of these works as notecards, I jumped at the chance to own something so special. He was the consummate artist, in every sense of the word, and I am so sorry for your loss.

I used to watch Chris play with the ASO from the second row in Athens throughout my childhood. His musicianship and kindness inspired me to pursue music as a career. He is missed!

Dear Rex Family,
I got to know Rex very well while he was building a home in 1990. Very nice man and an amazing talent. He will be missed.

It is with great sadness and sense of extreme loss that not only have I lost my dear brother, but the world of music has lost a true artist and devotee to the love of beauty. My greatest musical joy was performing with Chris which we did quite frequently, the highlight of which was to premiere with the New York Philharmonic a double concerto, "The Veil of Illusion," written especially for us by composer Stephen Paulus as a joint commission by the NYP and the Atlanta Symphony, a portion of which can be heard on the NYP´s Instant Encore site. He also performed with many of the greatest artists of our time in chamber music concerts at the festivals he founded. Living alongside the artist in him was a person with a unique sense of humor, and some of my happiest years were living and working with him in the Philadelphia Orchestra in the 1970s. Although we would later be separated by a thousand miles, we always remained close, and when we got together, it was if we had never been apart. I will miss him totally beyond my ability to put into words.

I went to Gettysburg High School with Cathy Rex (class of 1971) and was 3 years younger than Christopher. I will always remember watching Christopher play with the senior high school orchestra from the audience and being in awe of his talent. I came from a pretty musical family (a younger sister Mary went to Curtis also and plays viola in the Met Opera Orchestra and I took violin from Norm Nunamaker at the college although I stopped in college) and Christopher was a big inspiration to all of us. Even then we all knew Christopher was very special! When I moved to Atlanta I had an apartment in my house that I rented to a Curtis grad, Martin Chalifour who had just gotten a job with the ASO. Thanksgiving 1984 Martin and Christopher joined two of their ASO colleagues in what is now the study of my home in Inman Park but was then Martin´s living room and played quartet´s for a couple of hours for fun. It was a highlight of my life!! Throughout the years I would run into Christopher and always introduce myself. Since my father was pretty famous at Gettysburg College Christopher always remembered me. As a fellow resident of Gettysburg he made us very proud! I am so sorry that Christopher had to leave us all so young. You have my heartfelt condolences
