David Kalish Obituary
Family-Placed Death Notice
KALISH, David David Kalish passed away on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Emory Hospital surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born August 15, 1939 in New York City to the late Alexander "Bill" Kalish and Lillian Libin Kalish. David attended Bronx High School of Science in New York City and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston from which he graduated with an SCD in Material Science. During his graduate studies he worked at Mann Laboratories in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he developed ceramics for NASA. He then joined Bell Laboratories in Atlanta, Georgia where he was employed from 1972 to 2004. In his 32 years at Bell Laboratories he was responsible for over 10 patents and was a leader in the initial development of undersea fiber optic cable. David was preceded in death by his sister Stephanie Kalish Newman and is survived by his wife Janice Haber and his daughter Deborah Leslie Kalish. Other survivors include his brother-in-law Harvey Newman and his nieces Alexandra Newman-Kofinas and Lindsey Newman. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Georgia Heartland Humane Society or Schnauzer Love Rescue. Arrangements by H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, Sandy Springs, GA.

I had the good fortune to have worked with David Kalish at Bell Labs in Atlanta when that facility and the staff were new and am saddened to learn of his passing.

Dave's passing saddens me. He had a wry sense of humor which always made me laugh. I truly enjoyed working with him. His family has my heartfelt sympathy. May good memories of him give you peace.
