Dwight Graves Obituary

WARNER - Dwight Graves, 66, of Warner and Tucson Ariz., peacefully passed Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, surrounded by family and friends.

A Master potter, musician and artist, long-standing member of the League of NH Craftsmen, an active member of the Tucson Pottery Co-op, a NH Educator of the Year, accomplished musician, Vietnam Vet ('67-'69), Harley rider, activist, world traveler and peaceful warrior, Dwight was a remarkable "larger than life" character. Over the years he was active in the pursuit of peace and justice as a member of organizations including Clamshell Alliance, Veterans for Peace, and the American Legion. Dwight was also a founding member of the band Peggosus of Concord, and D'Moja, a high-energy African Diaspora drum and dance troupe based in Vermont. Dwight was the recipient of the NH State Council of the Arts Governor's Art Award recognizing his commitment to teaching pottery and art to everyone from little kids to adults. He worked at the Riverbend Mental Health Center in Concord for many years teaching pottery and founded the Pillar House Blues Band.

Dwight's spirit can be felt all over the state through the inspiring murals created by his students in New Hampshire schools and communities as an artist-in-residence. Many will remember his clay workshops and demonstrations in his teepee at the annual League of NH Craftmen's Fair.

He joins his wife and love, Maribeth and leaves behind his daughters, Erin and Kyla; grandsons, Aedan and Ashlin; his brother, Randy; two sisters, and countless circles of friends.

There will be a celebration for Dwight Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. at 39 White Rock Hill Road, Bow. Please bring a lawn chair, food and drink to share and your fondest memories. For more information about the celebration check out Dwight's Facebook page.

Mr. Graves was a guest in my art class back in the mid 80s. We made some pots which we fired behind the school along with a clay whistle (that I still have) which I had attempted to make look like Mr. Graves, gave it longer hair, goatee, mustache and the cool hat he had been wearing. He had made such an impact on me that I have thought of him all throughout the years since. I have recently started to include pottery in my life with the direction of my art therapist. The love of pottery was put in my life by Mr. Graves and I was really hoping to find him and thank him after all these years...My deepest condolences to all his loved ones.

A dear father, husband, and friend and inspiration to many, Dwight didn't just move across the Earth. He sifted, lifted and shifted the Earth using his massive hands and mind to make gifts for all.

Dwight was true free spirit, a bit odd but then aren't we all in some way. He indeed will be missed.

The deepest sadness in my heart that Dwight no longer walks among us. A true friend, mentor, spiritual counselor, teacher of many crafts and lessons. He was a hand holder, tear wiper, emotional supporter... He was so much to so many and helped us all grow, learn, discover, become and BE. The greatest gift on my journey in life was crossing paths with and being a small part of Dwight's circle of life. His lessons, his spirit, his deep love of all that is good can never be forgotten and I've carried him with me and will continue to do so always. Peace my friend, you are loved. Peace and Love especially to Erin and Kyla and all the members of Dwight's family far and wide.

Dwight was a courageous, outrageous, humongous force of nature. He left lots of beauty behind, especially Kyla and Erin.
He also left a legacy of love for the world. Peace, brother.

Dwight shared his many talents in the arts, as a founding board member of NH Very Special Arts. An organization dedicated to bringing all art forms to NH persons with disabilities. These folks flourished and grew under Dwight's teaching. Thanks for your light and spirit Dwight.
