My deepest sympathy to the family of James "Tennessee" Mitchell. I met Tennessee during my freshman year at Prairie View. He was a good friend and a great protector. May God bless you. His physical presence is gone, but he will live on in your hearts. I commend the Atlanta Falcons for honoring Tennessee at the Bucs game.

My deepest sympathies are extended to The Family of Jim Mitchell.
"Meat" was one of a kind! He always had a smile, a hug, and a kind word. His efforts, delivered in communities in which he lived, are appreciated and will be missed.
God said... "enough is enough Jim, come on home". "Well Done"!
I will miss him.
RIP my friend!

My deepest sympathies are extended to The Mitchell Family.
I met Jim in 1971 through his good friend and my GodBrother, "Big Claude". Because we lived nearby, I would see him frequently 'running' to aid in his training. Jim always greeted me with a smile and a hug. We had good and memorable times together. Even at the lowest point with his health, he seemed as courageous as when he was on the football field, and that's saying a lot. I will miss him.
Be assured that, though this is very hard, God has His arms around you and will guide you safely through this ordeal.

I was born in the same town as Mr. Mitchell, Shelbyville,Tn. He was my Uncle Rob(Turk)best friend. My Dad (Albert) was a good friend of his also. My Dad visited him a couple of times when he was coaching in Atlanta. As a kid I was always trying to get an autograph from him. I never got the autograph because of his schedule. I retired from Robins AFB in 2001 and I met a guy at Robins who was from Murfreesboro who always talked about when they played Shelbyville in football they had a guy named Pork Chop who was no joke on the field and they had no answer for him. May God bless him and his family.

Jim Mitchell was a true friend to me and my family. He would frequently call the house and was always so courteous to me. If I answered the phone he would first speak to me, then ask about all of my other family members. I remember thinking how gentle he is to be such a big man.
He always cared about my daughters. When Heather was hospitalized he came to the hospital to see her. He would always remember their names and ask about each of them by name. He would say, "How is Heather doing at UGA". He would say, "Is Jennifer keeping her grades up? Her Dad says she can really swing that bat!"
I always felt a warm feeling when talking to him. He made it so personal!
I first met Jim back in 1977 when he was playing with the Atlanta Falcons. He was the tough tight end with the pleasant smile. I was a diehard Falcon fan, traveling with the team. He always performed on the field and was a leader on the team. It is ironic that years later he met my husband and they became great friends.
I remember when he was to marry Emma. He mentioned it to me over the phone and I said, "you sound excited". He responded, "she's the love of my life!". I said to him, "your mama did real good!"
Here's hoping and knowing that Emma will lean on the Lord to get through this tough time!
