Lew Deadmore Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

LEW COWAN DEADMORE Llewellyn (Lew) Cowan Deadmore, Atlanta architect and art collector, died at home October 9, 2005, after a five-month battle with lung cancer. His last hours were spent with his loving family gathered around him. Lew was born April 18, 1927, in Abingdon, VA, the son of John James Deadmore and Dora Gose Deadmore. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1947. He then attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. After working as a draftsman and designer in several leading Atlanta architectural firms, he had his own practice for several years. Among buildings Lew designed are the Chemical-Ceramic Engineering Building at Georgia Tech, the Whitfield County Courthouse in Dalton, GA, the Savannah Water Works Building, and several schools. Lew next turned to what became his passion: the study and collection of Pre-Columbian, African tribal, and American folk art. Lew was a member of the American Institute of Architects, the High Museum of Art, the Carlos Museum, and several organizations dedicated to ancient art and archaeology. He will be remembered for his vitality and generosity of spirit in sharing his all-inclusive enthusiasm for life in general and the arts in particular. Lew lived to experience and share his ecstasy at being a spirit adrift in a sea of continuous creation and beauty through music, art, flowers and the people in the world around him. Survivors include his mother, Dora Deadmore of Abingdon, VA; a brother, John James Deadmore, and his wife, Phyllis, of Abingdon; a brother, Thomas Malcolm Deadmore, and his wife, Jerry, of Richmond, VA; a daughter, Evelyn (Lyn) Deadmore, and her husband, Stan Taylor, of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Lisa Deadmore Sipp, and her husband, David Sipp, of Penasco, NM. Other survivors are grandchiildren Sage Sipp and his wife, Hella Rader, of Brooklyn, NY; Timothy J. Sipp of Taos, NM; Elizabeth Sipp Robertson, her husband, Renauldo Robertson, and Lew's great-grandchildren Elias Flores, Haley Robertson, and Amaya Giroir, also of Taos. His closest friend of 29 years, Ruta Bremanis, also survives him. The body was cremated, and the remains will be interred in the Deadmore family plot in Abingdon, VA. Private memorial services will be held in both Atlanta and Abingdon. Those wishing to make a memorial gift may donate to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of their choice. Lew was also a connoisseur of art and particularly antique Buddhist art. An 18th century Chinese statue of the baby Buddha I purchased from him still graces our altar at Atlanta Soto Zen center.
