To the Cavanaugh family, we want to express our deepest, heart felt sympathies, and to extend our thoughts and prayers to you during this time of sorrow. My husband, Steve, & I did not know Stephen very long, but it was long enough for him to come into our hearts and make a lasting impression. He is truly a special man, whom we will miss dearly. He touched all of our lives and filled our hearts here at the VFW Post #9981, with his genuine spirit, willingness to help, and that precious brilliant smile. I got the opportunity to truly know Stephen while assisting him with his claim for benefits, so he would have a quick & smooth transition into the civilian world. Thank you Stephen, for allowing us to be part of your life; and, for your courage and service to our country. We all would have been proud to serve with you. You will always remain our "hero". Be at Peace and know how much you are loved. God Bless You...

To the Cavanaugh Family, We remember when the boys met at Boy Scouts and continued their friendship through high school and beyond. We waded through their growing pains as parents do. Steve, Susan you raised a respectful, caring, and honorable man. It is with profound sadness that we write this condolence note to your family. We loved and enjoyed Max’s friendship. Our hearts and prayers go out to your family. We are proud and feel privileged to have known him. Sincerely, Frank, Elbie, Paul, and Christine Ancona

Stephens smiling face will be forever missed at our Post (VFW 9981 Anchorage, Alaska).
God Bless you my friend and thank you for your service and your dedication to our country as well as your fellow veterans.
I am the Ladies Auxiliary President of VFW Post 9981, where Stephen had become a member. He was such a kind and caring young man. Always wanting to help in anyway he could. We lost a very special person that day. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during their time of sorrow.
God bless you Stephen, God Bless you.

My family and I offer our heartfelt condolences to SPC Cavanaugh's family, friends and fellow soldiers. A soldier doesn't serve without his family making sacrifices. I thank you for the sacrifices you have made while Max served. He is a hero and in my household, he will be remembered for that. There are no words that I can offer that will bring any amount of comfort, but I pray that God will wrap you in His comforting embrace during these difficult days.

To the Cavanaugh family, please accept my condolences at the loss of your son and brother. As the mother of one of our fallen soldiers, I know how you must feel right now. Please, if I can be of any help, let me know. I have ordered your Gold Star banner and will have it in a few days to present to you.

Susan, So sorry to hear about the loss of your son, Max. I know how much you love him. I remember you mentioning him so many times while working with you at Hitachi. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." May God hold and surround you with love during this time. Friend, Robin
