Zane Saheffer Obituary

Zane Arnold Shaeffer
3/14/1957 - 2/11/2011

Zane Arnold Shaeffer returned home to his Heavenly Father on February 11, 2011. He was 53 years old, from Newcastle, California.
Our dad was born on March 14, 1957, in Landcaster, California to Zane Leroy Shaeffer and Erma Ruth Soderberg. Our dad married his high school sweetheart and our beautiful mother, Catherine Eileen Messer, on December 9, 1978 in the Oakland LDS temple.
Our dad is survived by his wife, father, two brothers (Rick and Bret), and his five children: Zane Aaron (Alexis Pinegar), Aubrie Cynove Bragg (Samuel Bragg), Zachary Issac (Rachel Williams), Adam Bret (Tessa Nokleby), and Ari Drew (Alyssa Swanson).
To his grandkids, he was known as Papa. Papa of Anika, Cade, Eva and Mae Bragg, Zane and Weston Shaeffer, and Ruby Shaeffer.
Our dad graduated from Tracy High school in 1975. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served a two-year mission to Central America.
Our dad was a general contractor in our local area. Dad taught us all the importance of diligence and service throughout his life. Our dad was full of laughter, good times, and always focused on his wife and children before himself. We will always remember our dad for being solid, hard working, family man, soft spoken, funny, gentle, a leader, an observer, sentimental, collector, bird watcher, bug lover, outdoorsman, early bird, historian, friend, a husband and dad. We love you dad.
A celebration of our Dad's life will be held at noon on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at the LDS church on 287 Poet Smith Drive, Auburn CA, 95603.

Dear Cathy,
It was with great sadness that I read about Zane's passing this morning. You and he were such wonderful people to have worked with. It goes without saying that Zane will be missed by many. May he rest in peace, and my deepest sympathies to you.

Occasionally in life you encounter a family so exceptional and full of Christlike love that you will always remember the mark that they made on your life. The Shaeffer family is one of those amazing families that I have been blessed to meet in this life. Zane and his family not only had such Christlike love, but they all went above and beyond to share it with others. All of us missionaries will always remember the way that you loved us and helped in the missionary effort. I am confident that the missionary work continues on the other side of the veil. Zane was a great man and my heart goes out to your family and I pray for you that you will feel the comforting hand of the Lord through this hard time.

Dear Cathy and family,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you pass through this phase of life. He was always so friendly toward everyone, kind, considerate, loving, helpful, and always willing to go beyond the expectation of duty. God bless you all.

To each his own the voice does come
By which the future's dream is past,
And we are gathered to be one
When with our hope in God is cast.

No silence calms the aching heart
Of memory's remembered stance,
And without words his life departs
While we remain at a distance.

God, our Father touches our eyes,
Grants us vision beyond our years,
Wraps us in His arms and blessed sighs,
And assuages the uncontrolled tears.

No more the plain on which we stand,
Limited in space and marked time,
But trailing clouds that are grand,
We rise to feel God's hope and clime.

Reach out and hear the stilled sound
By which the Father speaks His love
Allow friends' joy your hope surround
And feel love and hope from above.

So often, I would find Zane fixing, building, moving, lifting, hammering, drilling, or simply "taking care of" us at Harvest Ridge Charter School. Things that were such a project for the "gals" at school to manage, would be so easy for Zane! I can laugh out loud when I think about the time Cathy and I kept directing "a little left, no up, now over a bit more..." as good natured Zane tried to hang the oversized white board in our staff room! Zane simply smiled at us and finally just drilled away! Our school has been forever touched by the sweet Zane Shaeffer. Smiles.

Zane was a friend and a client of ours for several years. We enjoy Zane's sense of self and his fun sense of humor on many subjects as well as his role as a General Contractor. I enjoyed doing Zane's engineering on many projects.
We will miss him greatly.

About 6 years ago Brotthe & Sister Shaffer opened their homes to us as they always do to the missionaries and ever since then there is a part in my heart for this family. Brother Shaffer you will always be remembered and my prayers will continue to be with my beloved friend Cathy. God be with you. Much love.

The wonderful qualities that are seen in all of Zane's boys are a testament to his qualities as a father. He was always caring about other people. He will be missed.
