Brooke Webber Obituary

Brooke Webber
Augusta, GA—Brooke Bland Webber died December 10, 2020 after a short battle with viral pneumonia brought on by COVID-19. He was born in Philadelphia County, PA on October 28, 1929 to George H. Webber, Sr. and Ethel Sassamann Scheffey Webber. The family lived in Montgomery County, PA, and Brooke excelled academically, becoming the salutatorian of his class at Conshohocken High School. He continued his education, earning the A.B. cum laude from Lafayette College in 1951 and, after a stint in the army, the M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale University.
His professional career took him initially to the University of Tennessee as a postdoctoral fellow and then to the biosatellite project at Oak Ridge (TN) National Laboratory to study the effects of radiation and weightlessness on drosophila and neurospora. He then taught introductory biology and microbiology at Augusta College, achieving the rank of associate professor. His career concluded with a long tenure as a researcher in the sickle cell center at the Medical College of Georgia. During his 52 years in Augusta, he was active in First Baptist Church, particularly in the music and senior adult programs.
Throughout his professional career, he served concurrently as a musician. Such posts included tenures as pianist for the Lafayette College glee club and later for the Oak Ridge symphony and as organist for First Baptist Church (Oak Ridge), Holy Cross Presbyterian Church (Evans, GA), and, finally, Grovetown (GA) United Methodist Church, a position he held for 28 years.
Brooke was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Randall C. Webber, a sister, Sarah M. Webber, and his wife of almost 65 years, Dorothy G. Webber. He is survived by two brothers, George H. Webber, Jr. and Richard G. Webber, and a son, Randall C. Webber.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 11, 2021, 1:00 PM, at Story Chapel, First Baptist Church, 3500 Walton Way Extension, Augusta, GA 30909. Masks and social distance will be required.
Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Augusta, GA; Grovetown (GA) United Methodist Church; or Lafayette College, Easton, PA.
