Frank Couvillon Obituary

Frank Anatole Couvillon, Sr., 89, of Ocean Isle Beach, NC passed on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was a wonderful father and grandfather, a devoted husband, and embraced everyone he knew as part of his family. Our father was a spirited, intelligent man who had a strong will to live life well, inspiring others to do the same. Every person he encountered was significant to him. He believed anything was possible for any one of God's children and generously gave his time and resources to enhance the lives of others. Relationships were the jewels in his life.

Mr. Couvillon was born on April 13, 1929 in Greenville, Mississippi to the late Clarence Oge' Couvillon, Sr. and Radie Dismuke Couvillon. He was raised on Steele Bayou near Rolling Fork, Mississippi in the Mississippi River Delta. The years he enjoyed with his family growing up on Magnolia Plantation would influence the rest of his life. His deep velvet voice and storytelling was the instrument into your heart. He loved dancing, singing, Big Band music, Jazz, and the Blues. Mr. Couvillon graduated from Central High School in Charlotte where he played football. After serving in the Navy during the Korean Conflict, where he received the Purple Heart award for valor, Mr. Couvillon went to work for E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company at the Savannah River Site. In 1956, he and his wife married and moved to North Augusta, SC, where they lived for the next 18 years and brought up their family. In 1974, Mr. Couvillon and his family moved to Ocean Isle Beach, NC being transferred to DuPont in Wilmington, NC. He retired from DuPont after 30 years in management. Mr. Couvillon was a member of the Shallotte Presbyterian Church and a recipient of The Order of the Long Leaf Pine award. He was also a football coach for the Optimist League in North Augusta, SC.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Couvillon was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Brewer Couvillon, his youngest daughter, Aimee Clara Couvillon, his oldest daughter Caroline Kay Couvillon Austell and her husband Larry Williams Austell, his older brother Clarence Oge' Couvillon, Jr. and his sister Nancy Augusta Couvillon.

Surviving are his two sons, Frank Anatole Couvillon, Jr. and David Brewer Couvillon of Honolulu, Hawaii; his daughter Anne-Marie Couvillon Rourk and husband Glen David Rourk of Shallotte, NC; two beloved grandchildren, David Chandler Rourk II of Shallotte, NC, and Aimee Catherine Rourk Sasser and her husband Alex Dean Sasser of Hallsboro, NC; sister Irene "Dumpling" Deal of Lake Wylie, SC and sister-in-law Alice Couvillon of New Ellenton, SC; numerous nieces, nephews, and very dear friends.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM on Monday afternoon, October 8, 2018 , at Shallotte Presbyterian Church, 5070 Main Street, Shallotte, NC. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the church. Entombment will be in the Brunswick Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, 5229 Ocean Highway West, Shallotte, NC.

I worked with Frank at DuPont in the first years after going into the maintenance department as an industrial mechanic. He was a very likable person and a friend to everyone. As my foreman for several years I found him to be a fair man to work with and he certainly had gift of "coloring up" a story to make it more interesting that's for sure. He was a good man and always seem to have smile for everyone. He will be missed...

Frank Jr., David, Ann-Marie,
We are deeply saddened to learn of Frank's death. His life brought so much enrichment to those who were fortunate enough to have called him friend. Although the years found our families living in many different places, time has not dulled the many wonderful memories we share of Belevedere.

Please know that we will continue to carry you in our hearts, our thoughts, and our prayers in the coming weeks. Your loss is truly heavens gain! Forever and always your friends the Gunters

Frank Jr, David and Anne-Marie:
Belinda and I were very saddened to learn about your father's passing this past week. Your family has been very dear to the Gunter's for many years, and mom still shares memories of when two young couples met so many years ago. The bond that our father's shared was something rare, which has had a lasting impression on me.

For me, I remember your dad as my first football coach, us playing as kids at your house in Belvedere, his encouraging words during visits at the beach, and the way he welcomed Belinda when she and I married. I can never recall a time when his love, joy and kindness wasn't present or expressed.

Please know that our prayers will be for each of you, asking for God's embracing love and comfort during this time of loss.

Frank was so special to me . He and my dad were in the Navy together.
I remember all the Couvillon children from Belvedere . Y'all were our next door neighbors on Belair Rd.
So glad I got to visit he and Margaret a year before Margaret passed.
What a true and kind friend he was to my family.
My prayers and thoughts are with each of you.
