Alice Mendivil Obituary

Mendivil, Alice Contreras "Flower"
"Si Se Puede," "Yes You Can," the motto of our beautiful mother, grandmother, and friend which left us on July 2nd, 2016 to join her father Santiago Contreras, mother Erlinda Piez Contreras, her five sisters, two brothers, her son David Edward Mendivil, her granddaughter Angel Alicia Mendivil, and her great grandson Jacen Cain Lopez in God's final resting place. Alice Mendivil, known as "Flower," was born November 30th, 1934 in Mogollon, New Mexico. She is survived by her husband of fifty-nine years Ed Mendivil, her children Debi Mendivil, Gregory Mendivil and Steven Mendivil. She is also survived by her children's spouses; Ed Gonzales, Jenny Pence, and Christina Mendivil. Flower is also survived by her three brothers; Sonny, Tony, and Danny Contreras, along with, 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren; plus other relatives and many friends. She loved to spend endless summer nights with her family camping on the Rim in Payson. Her hobbies included camping, fishing, baking, drawing, sewing, knitting, and photography. Yes, she was very talented. Her passion for life was her family. She loved Christmas mornings, family gatherings, and Easter at Clark Park (Sparky's Park). She encouraged her family to be the best person that God wanted us to be. She loved to see her family flourish. Her best accomplishments was watching her family grow and becoming a great grandmother and great-great grandmother. Flower attended Queen of Peace Catholic School and graduated from Tempe High School. She worked for the Mesa Public Schools for 27 years; the majority was spent at Kino Junior High in Mesa. Flower's service will take place at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 15th, 2016 in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 141 N. MacDonald, Mesa, AZ 85201. Her "Celebration of Life" will follow at the Madonna Hall next door. Please come and share in Flower's celebration of a beautiful person. Donations may be made to the family to help with expenses.

Mrs Mendivil was a kind, supportive, sweet, strong and intelligent woman. I met her a Kino Jr. High when I worked there as part of the office staff. We didn't have much time together but she sure did make a big impression on me. I have always thought about her throughout the years and wondered how she was. You were truly lucky and blessed to have had her in your life. My condolences to you all. May she rest in peace. Will always remember you Alice.

I met Alice when I taught English at Kino Junior High in Mesa, Arizona for seven years. Alice was a great example and taught the students manners. For example, one day she told me how she saw immigrant students refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. She told them, "Even if you are not a citizen of this country, the right thing to do is to stand respectfully." She was truly an example of a fine lady in so many ways. Godspeed, Alice. Love, Donna Erno

My nana will be truly missed, as she is the rock and soul of our family. There is a void here now that we will never fill, our holidays and family gatherings won't be the same without her. My memories of her will be cherished forever. My heart aches knowing I will never see or hug her again during my lifetime, and the only thing that eases this tremendous loss to our family is knowing that she is no longer in pain and has been reunited with those she loves who have passed before her. I love you dearly, my beautiful and strong nana Flower. Thank you for all the love and encouragement you gave me. Thank you for teaching me to stand up for and speak on my beliefs, even if nobody agreed. Thank you for being you. You are one of a kind and I will miss you with all my heart and will mourn our loss of you, until we meet again at heavens gates.

Flower was a dear friend of mine when we worked at Komar of Arizona as teenagers. The photo is of us wearing the Komar p.j.'s. She was one of the sweetest, and kindest friends I ever had. I'm so sorry we lost touch and if I had known her married name, I would have contacted her. I've thought of her so many times through the years.

18 years old, Carol and Flower
