Bill Close Obituary

Bill Close
passed away January 27, 2013, with his family at his side. He is survived by his wife, Carol Joy Close, and three children: son Bill, Jr. (Ruth), daughters Chris (Doug) Stover and Cindy Anselme, all of whom reside in the Phoenix area; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bertha Costello of Truckee, California. He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter born January 3, 1948, and a granddaughter, Autumn Close.

Bill was born in Grand View, New York, May 20, 1921, the son of first-generation immigrants. His mother, Bertha Hilda Detka, was born in Prussia. His father, Reverend James McAvoy Close, was born in Scotland. The family, including younger sister Bertha (""Bert""), lived in various New England states until 1934 when they moved to California; they travelled, literally, ""by thumb"", hitchhiking across the continent. The journey took 53 days.

Bill grew up in and around Oakland, California. Despite an unfortunate encounter with a train at age 15, he lived a full and active life. He attended Stanford University, was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, and married the ""JOY"" and Love of His Life, Carol Joy Norling May 8 1943 in Oakland, California. He began his broadcasting career on his 22nd birthday (KLS) in Oakland, worked in San Francisco (KCBS) and Chicago (WAIT), then came to Phoenix in 1946 to work for former Governor Jack Williams at Radio Station KOY. He was hired first as an announcer, later earning his own Morning show, ""Close to You"", taking its name from a song that was popular at the time. Bill was promoted to Sports Director and for 10 years his radio program ""Close-ups in Sports"" was broadcast 5 days a week. He was honored as Arizona Sportscaster of the Year in 1952. Bill's final promotion was to News Director, a position he held for the remainder of his tenure at KOY. In 1964, Bill moved to television and Channel 10, then known as KOOL-TV where he was Vice President – News, News Director, and Anchor and Commentator of the 6pm news for over 28 years. He retired from Channel 10 (now KSAZ-TV) at the end of 1992, completing 50 years in broadcasting.

Bill's interests were many and varied. He served on the Scottsdale School Board; charter member of the Phoenix Press Box Association (held all offices including President); board member, Jane Waylan Child Center; member of the Phoenix Press Club, the Arizona Press Club, the National AAU Public Relations Committee, the Roosevelt Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Radio and Television News Directors Association, Sigma Delta Chi, and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He was inducted into the Arizona Broadcaster's Hall of Fame. He co-founded the Bola Tie Society of Arizona, serving as its president for 36 years. With Governor Rose Mofford, he co-chaired the Zane Grey Cabin Foundation, and was honored with the Zane Grey West Society's Purple Sage Award. He served on (and chaired) the Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, and was appointed to the Arizona State Pardon and Parole Board. With good friend Phil Rulon, he co-edited the book ""The Many Faces of Zane Grey"", and in 2003 he wrote his own autobiography. He was an avid stamp and coin collector, and a member of the Southwest RedWingers Society. He loved sports of all kinds, and held season tickets to ASU football and basketball for several decades. With his wife, Joy, he traveled to all 50 states, as well as several destinations in Europe.

Bill's primary interest, however, was his family, of whom he was very proud. His wife Joy was the center of his universe for almost 70 years.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Christ Church Lutheran, 3901 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to THE BILL CLOSE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP, c/o The NAU Foundation, P.O. Box 4094, Flagstaff AZ 86011. My parents moved to "the Valley" in 1953. Shortly after that, my Dad purchased our first TV. We settled on Bill Close as our news anchor of choice. I loved his wonderful, mellifluous voice, his honest, straightforward approach to the news and his open warmth to everyone. In this time of my life, in my '70's, I have an even greater appreciation of Bill Close and the kind of man he was. It was clear that the man you saw in front of the camera was the same behind the camera. My comment is years overdue but sincere just the same.

I just read about Bill's passing on the Life in legacy website. My prayers go out to his family. I remember watching him every night when I lived in Scottsdale. He and his bola ties will not be forgotten. Truly a gentleman.....

To Bill's family and colleagues. having lived here 57 years and as a former officer with the old Valley National Bnak of course I got to know many of the radio and TV personalities but out of all of them I never had the pleasure of meting Bill personally but Lois and I watched him every night on the 6PM News on 10 and we were there the night that our friend Mary Jo West started and what a news breaking occasion that was at least to those of us viewing the newscast.

To Bill's family I know your loss and feel your pain for Lois is now gone and as in Bill's case his void can never be filled except we must move on and savor the fond memories and keep his spirit in your hearts as we who enjoyed his work will do.Rest in peace Bill for your work here on earth is done and you are and were the best of the best in what you did and how you did it. Sincerely L.Hiram(Larry)Adams.

Bill Close was my "Father" in broadcasting, gave me my start, guided & pushed me to search for perfection. I credit ALL of any success I have achieved to the foundation he helped build. I was honored to know him and the undisputed love of his life, Joy. My prayers are with the Close family as Bill receives his heavenly reward. I thank GOD for having Bill in my life.

Bill influenced so many people's lives and mine was one.
His bark was always bigger than his bite, and he was a total softie when it came to his wife, Joy. He was so wonderfully devoted.
There was never a dull moment co-anchoring with Bill, but I knew I was sitting next to a pro who continued to teach me and care about my well-being and as well as my son's.
Few people can have such influence on so many and also claim a bit of history for pioneering in broadcast journalism.
Thank you Bill. We honor you.

Had the pleasure of listening to Bill several years ago at a PR Program on Camelback with my ASU group, WIC. He was a remarkable man, and will never forget that he defined being handicapped as merely an inconvenience you work to overcome as much as possible. Bill, you brought much life to Arizona and our Phoenix City! RIP!
