Christine Ann (Palfy) Austin

Mesa - passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, after a heroic two-year battle with lung and heart disease. Christine was born May 2, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Frank and Mary Palfy. Christine is survived by her husband Robert, two daughters: Robin Austin Rodriguez and Amy Austin, and three grandchildren: Anthony Rodriguez, Phoenix Peck, and Elijah Peck, brother Jack Palfy (Margie), two sisters: Marilyn Yokiel and Lynne Cowles, sister-in-law Nancy Hartley, and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Christine graduated from Euclid Senior High School class of 1965. Christine married Robert on December 14, 1968, in Euclid, Ohio, and moved to Mesa, Arizona, in 1985. Christine was an administrative assistant for 16 years at TRW airbag division. The last 14 years she was the Coordinator of Development Operations for Arizona State University Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. Christine loved helping others achieve their dreams through donor scholarships. When Christine was not working, she spent most of her time with her family and loved ones. She loved to go to the beach and take her grandchildren and daughters to Disneyland. Christine was an avid supporter of animals and even adopted a Manatee. There were many impromptu trips to Las Vegas where she could be found spending hours in front of video poker and slot machines. The family would like to thank all the wonderful doctors, hospitals, and staff for all their hard work and dedication to Christine during her two-year fight. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be given to The American Diabetes Association, American Lung Association, American Heart Association, or the charity of your choice. Services will be held at Christ the King Roman Catholic Church on Thursday, December 28, 2017, at 10:00am, located at 1551 East Dana Avenue, Mesa, AZ, 85204. Internment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery located at 7900 E. Main Street, Mesa, AZ, 85207.

One of my fondest memories of Chris was our trip to San Francisco with her and Bob. We traveled down the coast to Carmel (which she loved). It was Chris and Bob who introduced us to the beach at Oceanside, and we spent several summers co-renting a beach house. We met Chris and Bob through Alta Mesa Golf Club and bonded quickly, because we are all from Cleveland, but most of all because you could not help but love Chris.
Another fun memory dates back to 1992 when my son got married. The reception was at Alta Mesa GC and my cousin, JoAnn, from Euclid had flown in. As JoAnn and I were walking down the 4 steps from the dining room, Chris was walking up....JoAnn and Chris squealed when they recognized each other...it turns out they were in the same class at Euclid High School and because teachers sat students alphabetically in homeroom Chris Palvy always sat in front of JoAnn Pannetta! It was a wonderful and unexpected reunion.
Rest in Peace, Chris, dear friend. While you were gentle and sweet, you were a warrior fighting to live. Love from Sandy and Bob.
