Darrell Smith Obituary

Dr. Darrell D. Smith

Phoenix - On November 22, 2020, Darrell D. Smith, M.D., died while being cared for at home, under the direction of his admired colleagues. He was born November 2, 1935, to George and Lucy Hamilton Smith, the 6th child in a family of 11 children. In 1956, Darrell received his pre-med degree in Biology from Ohio State University and was married to Mary Catherine Smith. They spent 3 years in the U.S.A.F. flight training program before Darrell returned to OSU, where he obtained his medical degree in 1963. They moved to Arizona in 1965 to complete a Medical Residency and a fellowship in Cardiology. Darrell then practiced in Scottsdale until his retirement in 2005. After retirement, his interests included family time, flying, cycling, fishing, and reading. He was an active member of the Scottsdale Masonic Lodge #43 and a 48yr devoted member of Shepherd of the Hills UCC Church. He is survived by his wife, three children, Steven Smith (Janis), Joan Smith and Suzanne Smith-Santellanes, 5 grandchildren, Andy Smith (Kara), Adam Smith (Taylor), Aaron Smith, Mike Santellanes and Olivia Santellanes, his great-grandchildren Ava, James and Wyatt, and his extended family in Ohio. A memorial service will be held at a future date when it is safe to gather, due to the pandemic. The family wishes to express its appreciation to the many friends and colleagues who have offered their care and support and to Hospice of the Valley for their guidance during his final week. Green Acres Mortuary will be making arrangements and will announce services on their website in early 2021. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local food bank [or favorite charity].

I am so very sorry to hear of Dr. Smith's passing. He cared for both my parents for many years. My mother always thought it "divine providence" that he was her cardiologist as her name, like his wife's, was Mary Catherine also. His name was a household word in my parents' home ~ no matter what the ailment, friends and family would ask "What does Dr. Smith say?" He was a fine man, a fine doctor. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I worked with Dr. Smith in the Cardiac Cath Lab at Osborn Campus from 1992-2005. Dr. Smith was a pioneer in interventional cardiac procedures and a VERY good man. It was a privilege to work with him, know him and learn from him. He often accompanied his patients to surgery to make sure all went well. His patients ALWAYS came first, if needed he would come to the hospital even when he wasn't on call. I remember him showing up in his biking outfit on more than one occasion. He was missed when he retired as he will be missed now. Thx for a bunch of GREAT memories!

And he was late getting active in Masonry.

He had become a Mason and a York Rite Mason many years ago, but remained inactive due to his surgical activities.

I don't know where he was raised, but he came from Ohio near where my wife was raised.

He was a USAF pilot, fighter pilot I think, and chose to go into medicine rather than pursue a flight career.

His family should have a lot more information.

I met him at some Masonic activity, I think before I went to Vermont, discovered he was a Mason and in York Rite, and invited him to become active.

He did so with gusto, and became our best York Rite ritualist. I always wondered why he was never in some YR Grand line. Maybe he was and I didn't know it.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Smith while attending college at Arizona State University with his daughter Suzanne. Although out meeting was brief, I can day what an amazing man who raised such a beautiful daughter and friend. Without Suzanne's friendship and caring nature, I'm not sure I would have made it to graduation. Thank you Dr. Smith for your service and for raising an amazing family.

My love and sympathy goes out to this special family. We have been separated by miles but my heart has always been full of special memories spent with Uncle Dean and Aunt Mary, and my cousins. I love you all, and will miss him so much!

Darrell, a dear colleague and friend, such a great team we made taking care of our cardiac patients. I could always count on you to send me the most challenging surgical patients! Professional life aside, I always considered you a true friend.
