Edwin Grobe Obituary

Grobe, Edwin Paul "Papoo"
87, of Tempe, Arizona passed away on January 22, 2015, after suffering from pneumonia and congestive heart failure. He was born April 19, 1927 in Canton, Missouri to Rev and Mrs O.P. Grobe. From 1945-1947 Ed served in the U.S. Army in South Korea. After his discharge from the army he received his BA in French from William Jewel College. He then went on to Indiana University from 1950-1954 and got his MA and Ph.D degrees in French Language and Literature. While there he met and in 1952 married Mary Louise, beginning a 56 year marriage that would end only with his wife's death in 2008. In 1957 Ed, Mary Lou and her three children from a former marriage moved to Tempe, Arizona where Ed began what was to be a 32 year teaching career at ASU, retiring in 1989. Ed was a proficient classical pianist and composed choral music, performing at the First Unitarian Universalist Church and with the Arizona Masterworks Chorale. After his retirement he became a volunteer at Pueblo Grande Museum for many years. He is survived by his son and daughter, 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 3 great great-grandchildren and good friends The Martinez Family. As per Ed's wishes there will be no services. Family and close friends will scatter his ashes in the Memorial Garden at the Unitarian Church. "Life is a Waltz"

Ed was a valued friend of my parents Hubert and Pauline Gay who are currently dancing with the stars as Ed an Mary Lou join them. He will be missed on this earthly plain but the heavens are filled with music and dance...Life is indeed a waltz.

Oh my goodness, the laughs I used to have with Papoo who was at one time my father-in-law! Such a witty guy..and how I enjoyed trying to cook my very best for him when he visited us to make him feel special. We had love for animals in common also;such a gentle touch he had. R.I.P Papoo

John and I send our thoughts to Ed's family. Ed welcomed me to the department and gave me many tips over the years we taught together.
