Floyd Mead was my band director and trumpet teacher in grade school and junior high in the 1950´s. He was a HUGH positive influence in my life.

I was looking through old albums and came across one and it had a note inside. It's a recording of the 1960-61 varsity band. It's type written and signed by Floyd C Mead. I think this would be him. Would anyone in the family be interested in this album and note

Mr. Mead gave me a life long love of music, despite my utter lack of talent ! Now that's a teacher !

In junior high?, our band director, Floyd Mead, chartered a bus and took the band to Detroit to see Ben-Hur on
the big screen. It was amazing to see; I had never been to Detroit or to a big time theatre. Back home, Mr. Mead
brought out the sheet music to the movie, and we learned it. I remember how exciting it was to play such tremendous music.

I was an awful clarinet player, and was in awe of the good people; Jon Nelson and Kip Smith on trombone, Ann Moyer on flute, Bob LeBeouf on trumpet, Barb LeBeouf and Janice Carrington on clarinet. And Mr. Mead could step in to show them something, and play better than any of them of all of those instruments.

He was one in a million.

There are few people I have met that have provided the drive, mentorship, and team building I experienced throughout Junior High under Floyd Meads leadership. At that age, those skills remain lifelong as does my memory of him. He'll be missed

Hi all. Thanks so much for all of your notes. This is Margaret Mead Britain (MHS class of 1969). I'm living in Fayetteville, AR these days with my partner and our 16 year old daughter. It's been great to hear from so many people. And great to remember the plant club, David! Dad would have been happy to know that so many people have been back in touch. We'll all miss him a lot. He was one cool guy.

This is Tom Mead (MHS Class of '65 and currently a librarian at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire...), wanting to say THANKS to all of you. The family will be all together for Christmas. We'll have a little service and spend time remembering...

I grew up in the same neighborhood as Mr. Mead and his family and have fond memories of the "plant club" that his daughter Margaret and I were the sole members of. Although I never had Mr. Mead as an instructor I can certainly remember the profound influence he had on Central Intermediate's music activities. Best wishes to the family.
Regards,
David Cummings

Dear Dolores, Margaret, Lew and Tom,

We were so sorry to hear about Floyd's death. Please know we have been keeping you in our prayers.

We have so many good memories of Floyd and thank God that he was a part of our lives. His contagious optimism will be sorely missed in this world.

We can just imagine the "big band" he's playing with right now, blowing high notes on that trumpet of his, with a Conductor who's putting him through the paces...

You have all our love.

Dear Delores and friends...what can we say?! Not only was Floyd the greatest to work with, he was also our daughter's "stand-in" godfather!!!! We shall all miss him greatly.
Love to you all,

Ray and Penny Novarro

I met Floyd Mead when I auditioned for "The Lion In Winter," the first drama produced for the Little Theatre Guild at the new Center for the Arts. I won the part (of John), but what I really received was an introduction to one of the most robust, generous, and radiant spirits that I have ever been privileged to meet. That this man was among us is proof, to me, that the universe is a good and kind one, one that can be trusted. Your task is done, Floyd, and you did it top-notch. Your song will soothe us for a long, long time. My best to Dolores (my memories of her lovely face and her enthusiasm whenever I walked into Camp's Music Store for some piece of sheet music or other, is with me always).

Floyd was one of the 13 people present at my wedding to his Goddaughter Maria on a Friday the 13th. Thirty five years later, I have lots of memories of fun talks with him. He was always the guy to go for a good joke. He reminded me of Maria's father.
Lots of love to Delores & family.

Floyd was my first drum instructor in the '60s and my all time favorite band director (sorry, Gary). He also was the perfect person to portray Oscar Madison in the Midland small stage play "The Odd Couple." So long, Floyd.

I was so sorry to hear the sad news. Mr. Mead was a big influence in my young life in both the school band and the fabulous Chicago Band trip. My deepest sympathy to the family.

I was one of those music students Mr. Mead touched. In 7th grade, he switched me from flute to bassoon to fill a "need" in the band...and from there, I played bassoon in high school, in several TMI and Gilbert and Sullivan productions in Midland, and met some of my best high school friends. Mr. Mead helped make all that possible, and I thank him for that. His encouragement was contagious and he will be greatly missed.

It seems like a blink of an eye that It was 1955 and I was in the summer music program and Mr. Mead was my instructor. He was a great person. Our Sympathy's for your loss.
