Fred Hassig Obituary

Fred Henry Hassig

- - Fred Henry Hassig was born on October 19, 1939 in Ft. Defiance, Arizona, and died on March 6, 2018, in Phoenix, Arizona. Fred is the son of Elmer Gifford Hassig and Jeannette Marie Tullock Hassig and the brother of Lawrence Hassig, all of whom preceded him in death. Fred spent the first few years of his life living in Dennehotso, AZ and then moved to Joliet, Illinois to live with his grandparents when his father left for Europe to fight in the Timberwolves Unit of the U.S. Army in World War II. After the war, the family resumed their western adventure and moved back to Arizona, where his father began a long career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The family spent the next 12 years living among the Native American people all over the State of Arizona in places like Keams Canyon, San Carlos, Parker, Tuba City, Window Rock, Chinley and Tereva, before finally moving to Phoenix, where Fred graduated from Camelback High School in 1957. Fred's ties to the Native American community from his early years were an important part of the rest of his life, as he loved the people, their cultures and their arts. In 1957, Fred boarded the train in Gallup, NM and headed to Chicago to attend Northwestern University for undergraduate and dental school, which is where he met his beloved wife, Beryl Churchill. They married in 1964 and began their own western adventure, starting in Southern California during Fred's two years of service as a Captain in the United States Air Force and then on to Seattle for two years where Fred attended the University of Washington graduate program in orthodontics, which is where they met some of their closest lifelong friends. Upon graduating from University of Washington, Fred and Beryl moved to Arizona and started their own family. They raised their two children, Susan and John and Fred practiced orthodontics in Phoenix for more than 40 years. Fred cherished the lifelong friendships made during their early years in Arizona which lasted throughout the rest of his life. He had an amazing sense of humor and as a dear friend said, he loved to bring smiles to people's faces both personally and professionally. He was involved in the community and was passionate about helping others. As recently as a week before his death, he and his beloved therapy dog, Charlie Brown, were making their weekly rounds at Mayo Hospital to cheer up patients. Fred never met a stranger and he was a wonderful friend to many in times of need. Fred enjoyed spending time with friends and family, traveling, hiking, golfing, hunting, fly fishing, skiing, telling jokes and attending his grandchildren's sporting events and theatre performances. He was an avid outdoorsman and he completed the Iron Man Triathlon in Hawaii in 1984. Fred is survived by his wife, Beryl, his children Susan (Mike) and John, and his grandchildren Johnny, Allison and Andy Wissink. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1 P.M., Saturday, March 24th, at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley with a reception following at the church. In memory of Fred, please consider support for Caring Canines or the Valley Youth Theater. Arrangements are entrusted to Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home.

I just learned today and saddened of the passing of Dr. Hassig. I Knew he had retired, as my daughter and I were in his office and were so happy to see him and receive his wonderful hugs and smiles. He had just had knee surgery and we were able to sit down and visit and have a long and wonderful conversation with him. I am so grateful for that. He was and is a wonderful inspiration to all. Truly a genuine individual in every way. Anyone who met or new him, always came away a better person. Highly Respected. He always spoke so highly and loving regarding his family. We express our belated Sympathy and Love to your family. Thank you for allowing him to give so much to others as well. Respectfully. Vonnie, Shawn, Kevin, Chris and Liesl Sicz.

Our deepest condolences to the Hassig family. My wife Edith & I attended the 3/24/2018 service and were so saddened by the unexpected and tragic turn of events regarding Fred's passing. We had visited with Fred & Beryl barely a year ago, and they both seemed as vibrant and energetic as in 2012. That's how we wish to remember them. Fred & I graduated together with top academic honors from Phoenix Camelback High School in 1957 (the 2 'short geeks'), and stayed in contact through occasional luncheon get-togethers since then, especially during our recent 20 years living in Arizona.

The world lost a kind and gentle soul. Dr. Hassig was always at our office...planning his and Dr.Nichols next big adventure. He loved the outdoors but more than that he loved his family. His love for Beryl and their children was always apparent. But his love for the grandchildren was over the moon. He was so proud of them. I don't remember him without that great smile on his face. He was such a positive force. His legacy was leaving many with beautiful smiles. My son is one of those. Thank you Fred for your loving kindness over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family during this sad time. You are missed.
