Gary Olmstead Obituary
Phoenix - On November 14, 2018, the world lost a great man. We have heard this from more than one person when they heard the news that Gary Olmstead had passed. People in general were better off for knowing Dad. He had a heart of gold and was generous to a fault. He had the kind of knowledge that made you always want him on your Trivial Pursuit team, as he always could come up with the right answer. He had a great sense of humor that could put a smile on anybody's face. As a Christian, he embodied those principles that make society a better place. On November 14, 2018, the world lost a great man, but Heaven gained a great angel.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, please donate to Saint Mary's Food Bank in Dad's name.

Gary was a great guy. I feel lucky to have worked with him at the Arizona Republic. He always had a great disposition and a great eye for detail. The world is a less happier place with him not in it. My condolences to the family.

Hardworking, hard-nosed, detail-oriented and, yes, principled, Gary was a newspaper copy editor extraordinaire (although he probably wouldn't have used that word). I worked with him on The Republic's Features copy desk for several years. He always took the stairs (we were on the 8th floor), and he preferred to sit in a straight-back, sparsely padded metal chair, rarely taking a break. But what made him a good copy editor was that he loved words (he was a great speller) and he worked to get sentences and facts stated correctly. That and his encyclopedic knowledge of history, sports, grammar, movies, home repair and on and on. He made many of us better newspeople. I'm feel blessed to have known him.

I worked with Gary for many years in The Arizona Republic sports department. He was a great guy (and could really hoop!) We called him Stylebook because he had such a mastery of grammar, usage and Associated Press newspaper style. Im so sorry to hear of his passing.
