Howard Sullivan Obituary

Sullivan, Dr. Howard J.
passed away Nov. 20 at his home in Scottsdale AZ, as a result of complications from Parkinson's disease. Born in St. Helen's, OR, in 1931, he earned his doctorate at the University of Oregon. Dr. Sullivan taught at ASU's Education Department from 1971 to 2006, retiring at age 75. He was nationally known for mentoring the top master's and doctoral students in the field of educational technology. When he received ASU's top Mentor Award in 2002, it was said that he was responsible for more than 100 Ph.D.'s. A contributor to several psychology and education journals, he taught his students the value of thorough research and concise writing. His students now teach and mentor education students throughout the world; many have remained in touch with him over the years, some quite often. He was co-owner of Arcadia Farms Café with his wife, Carolyn Ellis-Sullivan. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Ellis-Sullivan; his children Darcy (Gabriel Firth) Sullivan of London, England; Mary Sullivan of Denver, CO; John (Monica Rua) Sullivan of Pacific Grove, CA; and his grandchildren, Finnian and Zoe Firth. Finnian is a recent graduate of the University of Cambridge, and Zoe is completing her studies at the University of Oxford. Howard also leaves a sister, Margie (Jim) Oliver of Port Orchard, WA. To honor his lifetime contributions to ASU, donations may be made to ASU Technology in Education Fund/Howard Sullivan 3001433, c/o Chelsie Hancock, PO Box 2260, Tempe AZ 85280. Donations may also be made to Hospice of the Valley, hov.org. Dr. Sullivan's memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 25, at Messinger Mortuary, 7600 E. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale.

My teacher, colleague and friend...farewell and safe travels. You will be missed but never forgotten (especially when I try to figure out the correct use of apostrophes).

To the Sullivan Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
