Marcella Samuelson Obituary
Marcella Misak Samuelson. Marcy Samuelson of Scottsdale, Arizona - passed away peacefully on May 27, 2004 with her three daughters by her side. Marcy was born on July 5, 1915 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the youngest daughter of Edward and Bess Misak.
As a young girl Marcy loved golf and was a junior golf champion during her high school years. She was a Pi Beta Phi at the University of Iowa and at Iowa State University, where she majored in journalism. She later
worked as an editor for the Torch Press. Marcy, who always loved a party, met her future husband, Robert Eugene Samuelson, at a country club dance in Cedar Rapids, where he literally swept her off her feet. The couple married in 1935 and moved to Chicago where their three girls were born. In 1950, the family decided to move to Arizona with a great sense of anticipation and excitement about their new life in the West. Once in Phoenix, Marcy and Bob embraced their new casual lifestyle, savoring the delights of the desert, mountains, old western towns, and nearby Mexico. Marcy was a loving mother who always encouraged her children and grandchildren to pursue their dreams, treat others with respect, and emphasized the importance of experiences over material possessions. Marcy was preceded in death by her husband Bob in 2001 and her sister Margaret Strain in 1995. She is survived by her daughters Marcia (Ted) Falk of Fresno, California, Nancy (Tom) Griepentrog of Montrose, Co, and Suzie Dale, of Scottsdale; grandchildren Kati Thomson of Fresno, CA, Theresa Nedelman of New York City, Kelley Falk-Maestu of Sacramento, CA, Erik Griepentrog of Steamboat Springs, CO, Chad Griepentrog of Los Angeles, CA, Chrissy Dale-Hendershot of Durham, NC, Alex Dale of San Jose, CA, and nine great grandchildren. Marcy will long be remembered by family and friends for her delightful sense of humor, her generosity, extraordinary interest in every person she met, and enthusiasm for all types of new knowledge. She undertook many volunteer commitments because of her concern for the welfare of others, making it a practice to reach out to the less fortunate. Her many lovely and remarkable friends reflected her love for people. A brilliant conversationalist, she knew how to draw people out and put the most timid at ease. She also loved to travel. Besides many summers on Balboa Island, she especially enjoyed her numerous trips to Europe and Mexico with Bob, family members and friends. She had standing dates with the Wall Street Journal and her iMac computer every morning which fed her interests in the financial arena and the world at large. A memorial mass will be held in Marcy's honor on Sunday, May 30, 2004 at 1:00 PM at St. Francis Xavier's Brophy Chapel, 4715 N. Central Ave, Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Esperanca, 1911 W. Earll Drive, Phoenix, AZ 85015. National Cremation Society.
