Reginald Smith Obituary

Reginald Garcia Smith, a Phoenix native, loving father, husband, and avid outdoorsman, passed away quietly on April 15 in the presence of his
family. Reg, who was well-known and widely admired, was born on March 25, 1930, to Placida Garcia Smith and Reginald Gerard Smith. He graduated from St. Mary's High School and from the University of Arizona, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. Reg served for two years in the United States Navy after graduation, leaving the military as Lt. J G in 1954. He joined Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate in Los Angeles as a sign boy after his military service. He returned to the Valley in 1957 as one of the founding real estate agents of the Phoenix Coldwell Banker office, when Park Central Mall opened. He was a big supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, having spent many years as a scout and at summer camps. He served as a scoutmaster at Madison No. 1 elementary school during the 1960s and also was a Little League coach. Reg had a lifelong passion for the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, hunter and wildlife conservation enthusiast who was involved with such organizations as Earthwatch, the Audubon Society, the Smithsonian Institute and various Arizona game and fish conservation projects. He was a volunteer participant on many of their expeditions. He was an adventurer who traveled extensively with Gwynn, his wife of 30 years, and Mexico always held a special place in his heart. Reg is survived by his wife, Gwynn; his children, Douglas Smith, Sharon Sullivan Mattern (Hal Mattern) and Leslie Smith; and grandchildren Chad, Henley and Emily. Donations in his name are being accepted by the Boy Scouts of America, 2969 N. Greenfield Road, Phoenix, AZ 85016. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday April 21, 2:00pm at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, located at 4800 E. Indian School rd. in Phoenix.

My heart goes out to Reg's children and Aunt Gwynn. I had met Reg several times when I was growing up at family get togethers back in Maryland but never really got to know him until we visited them for a week in AZ in 1989. I was a freshmen in high school. Hanging out with four adults; I thought I was going to be bored to tears, but Reg came through in such a huge way. He made memories for me that I tell my own kids about today. He was a great man with a huge heart. I never asked for anything, but yet he seemed to give to me the whole time I was there. Just small things to him, but extraordinary things to me. He took me hiking, drove me around in his Porsche, shared his hunting stories, took me to the Fiesta Bowl parade and to Scottsdale Univ. to see a private Notre Dame practice for the National Championship. He set it up so I could get autographs and everything. What I learned from him was he understood it isn't the material things in life that matter. It was the memories you make, the things you share with others, the little things in life that define your legacy. I will always admire him and respect him. I admire the way he treated my family and the bond he had with my dad. My only regret is that I wasn't able to be there to pay my respects. I have the utmost respect for him. God Bless!

Gwen and family. I was saddened to hear about Reg. You both were so much a part of our family. Mom and Dad always talked about you and were so pleased when you would visit. I am so sorry that I can not make it down for the funeral but my thoughts and prayers are with you.

As a member of Arizona Flycasters Club I will always remember Reggie’s passion for fly fishing and the old cane rods he lovingly restored, but especially the generosity with which he shared that passion with others. His broad smile was infectious and always brightened my workday when he visited the post office - I'm grateful to have known him.
