Richard Henrich Obituary

Richard E. Henrich died August 23, 2006 of complications following open-heart surgery. He was born in Buffalo, NY on January 15, 1924 to Loretta Reeb Henrich and Edward George Henrich. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy Cum Laude in 1942, where he lettered in Football and Wrestling. In appreciation for the spirit of excellence he gained at Exeter, Richard became a major benefactor of the Academy in recent years.     Richard received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Yale University in the class of 1945W and was a member of the Tau Beta Pi honorary society in engineering and Sigma Xi, the science honorary society. He subsequently graduated from the United States Naval Academy, where he taught hand-to-hand combat and was Battalion Commander of his midshipmen class.     Richard had a lifelong love of sports cars and motorcycles. He raced his Porsche Spyder at the Sebring International Sports Car Race in the 1950s and at the Limerock, Connecticut races. He met and married his beloved wife Charlotte in 1956 through the manager of a sports car dealership in Cleveland - Richard then owned the famous Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing and Charlotte had a MG TF. They married five months later in May, 1957 and celebrated their 49th anniversary this year. During his two month hospitalization, his sons Richard, Ward, and Brad spent weeks at his bedside, as did their wives Cheryl and Lisa, Allison his granddaughter, and Evan his grandson.  He also leaves grandsons Caden, three years, and Alex, two years. Richard was the ultimate "Gentleman" in every way. He was a man of outstanding character, admired by all, had a refined sense of art and beauty, and was a generous father and friend. Services will be private.  Arrangements by Messinger Indian School Mortuary.
