SALLIE "MICKEY" BROPHY, ACTRESS Sallie Brophy, an actress who had a number of starring and featured roles in television and film in the 1950s and 1960s, died September 18 at the University Medical Center in Princeton. The cause was non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a blood cancer. She was 78. Ms Brophy graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London in 1950, and her arrival in New York coincided with the beginnings of the "golden age" of live television. Ms Brophy did episodes of The U S Steel Hour, The Dick Powell Theater, Kraft Theater, the Alcoa Hour, Ben Casey, Medic, and The Fugitive, among many others. She worked with directors ranging from Sidney Lumet to Arthur Penn, and actors from Cliff Robertson to Marlon Brando. In the Producers Theater version of "Peter Pan," she played Wendy, grown up. In 1958, she starred in a Western television series, "Buckskin," for 39 episodes. She played the proprietor of a boarding house in the Montana territory. She had a featured role in the 1961 film, "The Children's Hour," starring Shirley MacLaine and Audrey Hepburn, which won 5 Oscars. She directed the off- Broadway production of the Joyce Carol Oates play, "Presque Isle." Ms Brophy was born Sallie Cullen Brophy in Phoenix, Arizona, December 14, 1928, the daughter of Frank Cullen Brophy and Sallie Blake. Her father had one of the last Spanish land grant ranches in Arizona, and while she grew up around horses, she never rode as an adult. She married George J. W. Goodman, the writer and television host better known as "Adam Smith," in 1961. When the couple moved to Princeton in 1965, she directed student productions at Princeton University. She taught theater and acting at Rider College in Lawrenceville, NJ, for 20 years. She also set up a firm, Public Presentations, to coach individuals and corporations in speaking. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, George Goodman, two children, Mark, of Newton, MA, and Susannah, of Washington, DC, and two grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Alice Brophy McChesney and Kathleen (Kate) Brophy, and her youngest brother, Rory Brophy, all residents of Phoenix.
