Alvin Ralph Gamboa
September 21, 1942 - October 27, 2017
Alvin Ralph Gamboa passed away in his sleep surrounded by loved ones at home on Friday, October 27th 2017 in Bakersfield, California. He was born September 21, 1942 to Genevieve Aguirre Gamboa Barazza and Cenon Gamboa in Los Angeles County Hospital. As a teenager he was on the wrestling and Junior Varsity football teams at East Bakersfield High School. Alvin selflessly served his country as a United States Airman, earning a Bronze Star in Viet Nam. After his return, he worked as an auto body repairer, as an auto body shop manager, and then as a claims adjuster for State Farm Insurance. He earned an Associate Degree at Consumnes River College by taking night and weekend classes despite his long work days.
Al had many interests, creative hobbies, and skills. Later in life he used these skills to become a licensed handyman. He relished the adventure of learning something new, and always possessed a pioneering spirit. He was generous with his time and donated his energies to many meaningful causes including coaching youth sports, as a parent Camp Fire volunteer, working with St. Luke's Garden Club, and as Senior Vice Commander of VFW Post 7216.
His survivors include Sherrell, his loving wife of 54 years; his children Allen and Gabrielle; his grandchildren Christopher, Blaine, and Whitney; his great-grandson Quentin; and his siblings Robert, James, Sandra, and Charles. He was predeceased by his brother Danny. Alvin was a beloved friend, uncle, brother-in-law, cousin, and mentor to many.
His memorial service is on November 8th at 10:00 AM at Hillcrest Mortuary at 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, California.

I was so saddened to hear of Al's passing. I had worked with Al for many years at State Farm. He was the nicest, kindest person you could ever meet. I consider myself fortunate to have known him. Also a huge thank you to Al for his service to our country. Prayers to all of Al's family as I know he will be greatly missed.

My Uncle Al was a man of few words, but when he did talk he made you smile and listen. Always full of life, helpful, encouraging, informative, caring, and handsome is only a start when remembering my Incle Al. He was an outstanding chauffeur and a very loving man. He will be missed and never forgotten. To even imagine him and my dad together now brings a smile to my being....

Uncle Al was such a good big brother to my mom. I can recall many times we needed his help. He was always there. No questions asked. He was just the kindest soul. He loved his family very much.

Uncle Al was one of the sweetest men I'd ever known. He was selfless with his time and even though he was quiet, when he spoke it was always meaningful. I believe that he has gone on to bigger and better things and that he is no longer suffering. I pray that my dear Aunt Sherrell and the rest of his immediate family can eventually remember his life first and not the pain of his passing. I loved my uncle and will always remember him fondly. Love to all my family and to my uncle's friends who feel the pain of his loss as well.

I first met Al when I was 15 and he was 17. I have never known him to be anything other than kind, loving, helpful and a good friend. And, oh yeah, he was a handsome dude back in the day. Just ask Sherril, he swooped her off her feet in the blink of an eye! Missing you brother.
