Mary Bozina Obituary

Mary was born and raised in Bakersfield. She attended local schools and Heald College in San Jose, CA. Before working as an executive secretary for Belridge Farms, she lived in Felton, CA, and worked for the Santa Cruz County Bank. Mary was preceded in death by her mother and father, Louise and Marty Bozina. She is survived by her sister and best friend, Shirley Bozina; her brother, Robert Bozina; his wife, Carmela; niece, Carmen Bozina; nephew, Trevor Bozina; his wife, Mallory; and three great-nieces: Zoey, and twin sisters Anika and Pella Bozina of Hood River, Oregon. Memories are cherished by her life companion, Charlie DeSimone. Mary endured many years of medical complications and uncertainties, which she faced with courage and perseverance before passing away unexpectedly at Bakersfield Heart Hospital. A private ceremony is scheduled, and Mary will forever have a strong presence in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary's name to the Bakersfield Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) 3000 Gibson St., Bakersfield, California 93308 (Phone: 661-323-8353).
Some of Mary's happiest days were spent vacationing in Hawaii with her sister Shirley and "hanging out" with her dogs and the horses at Bakersfield's Hack 'n Tack Stables, where she groomed and rode her all-time favorite horse, "Cornbread Bailey."
"I'm gonna saddle Big Bailey
I'm gonna take him for a ride
Going down that long river
To Ethel's to run and hide.
Watch out all you cowboys
Watch out all you pretty gals
I can outride anybody
With Big Bailey on my side."
(Chorus from "Mary's Song" by Bobby, Carmela, and Shirley Bozina, © 1980)
