Phillip E. Colbert, son of Patrick E. and Viola E. Colbert, born April 10, 1954, in Bakersfield, California, went to our Lord and Savior on October 27, 2003, as he rested after a brief illness. Phillip attended Potomac Elementary, Emerson Jr. High and graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1972. He was a member of St. Johns Missionary Baptist Church. Phillip moved to Los Angeles and was employed by Firestone Tire. Phillip went to work for Southern Pacific in 1986 working in numerous areas including the Los Angeles area, Santa Barbara area and Tehachapi as a heavy equipment operator for nearly 10 years. He returned to Bakersfield and married Bridgette Sharp in 1988. To their union a son was born, Phillip, Jr.
He enjoyed life, but most of all music, sports and being with friends and family. He always had a smile, enjoyed laughing, making those around him laugh.
Phillip and Tonya Phillips relationship continued to blossom during the five years that she loved and cared for him. In his final moments they held hands until he let go to take the hand of Jesus.
Phillip was preceded in death by his father, Patrick E. Colbert, Sr. and his brother, Lawrence Townsend. He is survived by his loving mother, Viola; son, Phillip, Jr.; stepsons, Windell Tucker, Bryson Pritchett and Marquis Davis; sisters, Carolyn Colbert, Oakland, Sharon Colbert (Wayne Johnson), San Diego, Debra Colbert Obiora, Houston, Texas; brothers, Tommie Townsend (Brenda) of Las Vegas, Patrick Colbert, Jr. (Berma), Oxnard, Glenn Colbert, Bakersfield, and many loving relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Friday, November 7, at 11 a.m. with an hour of meditation at 7 p.m. at Ruckers Mortuary, 301 Baker St., Bakersfield. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 8, at 10 a.m. at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 1401 E. Brundage Ln., Bakersfield.
