Ronald Huggins Obituary

RONALD HUGGINS

January 2, 1937 - April 27, 2023

Ronald Huggins began his life journey on January 2, 1937, in Madison, Illinois. He slipped away while we were sleeping on April 27, 2023.

Ronald was the second child born to Arthur and Luneeda Huggins. Ronald moved to Bakersfield, CA in 1946 where he began attending Lincoln school. Ron moved on to Bakersfield High School where he met many new students, some of which became lifelong friends and some even became family members.

Ron had a beautiful singing voice and joined the Colored Choir in 1952. This was pre civil rights and the schools were segregated at the time.

In 1957, Ron married his best friend, Vivian Fisher. They recently celebrated 66 years of marriage. Vivian's parents, Roy and Sarah Fisher, were entrepreneurs who owned a neighborhood gas station on 3rd & Clifton Street. They had migrated from Boswel, Oklahoma to Bakersfield, California in the early 40's. They were true trailblazers!

Ronald and Vivian welcomed three beautiful children into this world, Kenney, Eric, and Lori. He was a wonderful role model to his children and always had high standards. He traveled across the country with his wife and children and later with his grandchildren, Eric Jr. and Andrew J. Huggins, by car to his hometown in Madison, Illinois.

Ron demonstrated great work ethic. He was a very proud, honest and industrious man. He held two full time jobs at the same time for over 10 years, working for the United States Post Office by day and Kern Medical Center by night. He delivered mail on Niles from Beale Avenue to Virginia Street from the 60s through the 80's. His customers were like family to him and because of his swift mail delivery, he was given the name of Skates. After retirement from the Post Office, Ron began working for Cardinal Health where he worked diligently for 20 years.

Ron knew no strangers and was always giving to others. He loved people and they loved him in return. He also absolutely loved shopping! Ron enjoyed sports, with special a love for Track & Fields and Golf. He was on a Bowling and Golf team and participated in many tournaments. He proudly displayed his Certificate for getting a Hole in One. Ron also loved to decorate the inside of his home for Christmas. He loved family and often held gatherings in his home or at the park. It was always family that meant the most to him. Ronald often said that he lived longer than he ever thought he would. He said, the Lord gave me this time to care for Vivian. He never stopped taking care of his beloved wife. He was a true man's man.

Ron was preceded in death by his mother, Luneeda Robb; his son Kenny Huggins; his father, Arthur Huggins; brother, Arthur Leon Huggins; brother Lee A Huggins; sister Marsha Colbert; paternal grandparents, Peter and Roberta Huggins; maternal grandparents, Charles and Molly Robb; Aunt Freeda and Uncle George Hare.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Vivian; his children Eric Sr. (Beverly) Huggins; Lori (Larry) Rucks; grandchildren, Eric Jr. and Andrew Huggins; great grandson, Jaiden Huggins; brothers Robert (Rosaune) Huggins and Anthony Huggins; sisters, Wendolyn Williams and Evelyn (Steven) Turner; a very special niece, Victoria (Sarah) Kasinger; special cousins Kermit (Phyllis) Holliday and Jodi Light (Steven) Suggs, along with a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Viewing Wednesday, May 10, 5 pm-8 pm at Hillcrest Memorial, 9109 Kern Canyon Rd, Bakersfield, CA. Funeral services and internment Thursday, May 11, 9 am-10:30 am at Hillcrest Memorial.

My favorite cousin was a beautiful person, he knew the word love was an action, he would visit my mom and never came empty handed, he would bring her favorite peanuts, fresh fruit anything to make her smile, l live in Florida I got a package from my cousin Ronald it was a picture of me from social media he had it enlarged and framed, he said he loved my hair color and smile, I just cried to be thought of in such a lovely way. That was love, he always encouraged me to step out the box and live, I miss our conversations.
Rest in power cousin I love you

I was 17 years old and worked with Ruth Pena-Gamboa at Niles Drug Store when Skates came in to deliver mail one Saturday morning with a great big smile on his face. Since I was still in high school I looked forward to visiting with Skates on Saturdays. I was very fortunate to reconnect with him on FaceBook and asked him if he was aka Skates. I told him who I was and he remembered me. This was almost 50 years later. I was also lucky enough to meet him again at Angie Pena-Garcia's retirement party. Angie by the way was the one who gave him the name of Skates. I also worked with Lee at the Roads Dept. for six years and thought the world of him. Rest in Peace Ron, you are loved and will be greatly missed.
