Arthur Buckingham

Age 95 of Edina, Minnesota, passed away on August 11, 2025. Art was born and raised in Upstate New York. He graduated from Father Leo Memorial High School in Croghan and completed a postgraduate year at Lowville Academy in Lowville. After graduating from Clarkson University in Potsdam with an electrical engineering degree, Art joined Westinghouse Electric Corporation, first working in Pittsburgh and then Baltimore. Following two months' active duty in the U.S. Army, Art was called back to Westinghouse to resume his work on the "Nautilus," the first nuclear submarine. Art later became an aerospace pioneer with many patents to his name. The satellite orbit positioning technology he developed remains in use today. Art was a Charter Member and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Art met his wife, Carolyn, at Westinghouse. They were married in 1960 and their only child, Elizabeth, was born in 1964. Art was active in his community, serving as President of the Hunting Hills Swim Club in Baltimore, President of the Rotary Club in Catonsville, Maryland, and on the Board of Directors for the Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas.

Art loved going back to Upstate New York, taking family trips every summer and returning for deer hunting in the fall and maple sugaring in the spring. He enjoyed golfing and playing cards, especially euchre, poker, and bridge. He especially treasured playing bridge in his Minnesota senior living community after Carolyn's passing in January 2023. Throughout his life, Art was known for his wry sense of humor and his generosity to family and friends.

Art was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn; his parents, Arthur and Bernice; and his siblings Zane (Ann), Doris (David), Eleanor (Paul), Francis (Barbara), and Nancy (Richard). Art is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth (John Owens); granddaughter, Erica; and a large extended family. Memorials preferred to American Legion Post #1663 of Croghan, New York or Grace Hospice of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
