Charles Brandt Obituary

Charles E. Brandt Jr. died on December 30th after a battle with cancer only two days before his 88th birthday. Born in Baltimore and raised in Ten Hills, Chuck was a graduate of the McDonogh School ('45) and Monmouth College (Illinois) ('51). Chuck began his professional career with the family steel fabrication firm, Charles T. Brandt Corporation, which won Maryland's first Navy "E" for war production in 1942. In 1960, he left the firm, married Betty nee Worthington then of Ruxton, and moved to New York where he would spend 17 years in the architectural metals field with Reynolds Aluminum and International Nickel before finishing in his career in Chicago. Chuck and Betty then returned to Baltimore in retirement where they enjoyed the urban pleasures of Mount Vernon Place, and Chuck worked as a docent at the Baltimore Museum of Industry, where he regaled visitors with personal knowledge of the city's industrial history. He lived at Charlestown in Catonsville from 2007 until his death, is predeceased by Betty, and is survived by his two sons John Brandt of Springfield, Virginia and Bucky Brandt, his daughter-in-law Elizabeth Brandt, and his two grandsons Forrest and David Brandt--all of Underhill, Vermont. A memorial service for Chuck will be held in the chapel at Charlestown on Saturday, January 17th, at 11 am.

Charles was a lovely gentleman and a wonderful docent. I got to know and appreciate Charles's knowledge when I was the Director of Education at BMI. I have many fond memories of Charles and Betty.

I remember meeting with Charles and Betty at a BMI behind the scenes event for supporters. They both asked a lot of questions and were a lovely couple. They asked about the Education Department and the programs. I know Charles will be missed. He knew how to hold the attention of visitors with his knowledge told in a very delightful way.
