James Schafer Obituary

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of James Richard "Dick" Schafer of The Villages, Florida, who peacefully left us on July 7, 2025.

Born on February 24, 1940, in Terre Haute, Indiana, Dick was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Louise Schafer; his cherished children, Sally Mandes (Dave), Jim Schafer (Marie), Laurie Murphy (John), Candi Urch (Brian), and John Schafer (Mary); his brother, Dan Schafer (Margaret); along with nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, James Adolf and Ada Ruth Schafer (nee Murphy).

A proud graduate of Wiley High School ('58) and Rose Hulman Institute of Technology ('62), Dick's career as an electrical engineer spanned decades of innovation and adventure. His work with Western Electric took his family across the country, moving over 20 times before finally settling in their dream home on a golf course in The Villages.

Dick's warmth, intelligence, and zest for life touched everyone he knew. His legacy of love and dedication will be cherished forever.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Dick's life with a visitation on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM at St. Joseph's Church in Cockeysville, Maryland. A funeral mass will follow at 10:00 AM. Burial will be held at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, with a light lunch served afterwards.

In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Tunnels to Towers (t2t.org) in his name.
