John Russell Obituary

On April 30, 2017, John Russell of Baltimore, Maryland was taken from us suddenly when he collapsed riding his bicycle with his beloved wife Katie Vaselkiv. As a long time bicycle enthusiast and employee at Race Pace Bicycles, John had just helped open a new location in Towson, which he was to manage. A 2007 graduate of Towson High School, John was elected President of his senior class, and was also founder of a ska music band. A graduate of Wheaton College in Chicago with a degree in Environmental Studies, John's love of life was apparent to all who knew him, always willing to help those in need. While in college, John worked one-on-one with children with autism to help them reach their full potential. John's faith in Christ was at the center of his life and was a founding member of a Saint Moses church in Remington, where he shared his love of music by leading worship. He was a volunteer mentor with Young Life in Baltimore City. John and his wife Katie have been strong advocates for Baltimore youth and refugees. Orthodox in the most unorthodox ways, John redefined the word "unique". He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and those he touched. John is survived by his wife Katie Vaselkiv, parents Curt and Sally Russell, brother and sister-in-law Bill and Lauren Russell, brother and sister-in-law Tom and Emily Russell, sister Peggy Russell, sister Kate Russell, father-in-law and mother-in-law Mark and Kathy Vaselkiv, brother-in-law Matt Vaselkiv, brother-in-law Peter Vaselkiv and many more cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. Visiting hours for family and friends will be held at Central Presbyterian Church in Towson on Friday, May 5th from 3pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm. A memorial service will be held at Central Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 6 at 11am. A Celebration of John Russell's life will be held at Race Pace Bicycles, 1414 Key Highway, Baltimore 21230 on Saturday, May 6 at 6pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory can be made to the Refugee Youth Project (http://www.refugeeyouthproject.org/get-involved/donate/) or Baltimore City Young Life (https://baltimoreurban.younglife.org). www.RuckFuneralHomes.com

I am searching for relatives of John (Jack) & Margie Russell. Jack passed away at age 98 at the V.A. Hospital in Martinsburg, WV. Margie passed in 2011. They lived in Augusta, WV. I am searching for his grandson. His daughter's son. Jack's son was called Russ because his name was John Russell as well. Russ & his wife Sarah have apparently left West Virginia since Jack's death, possibly going back to Russia.

I am so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you.

John was our first one on one aide for my son several years ago and was the best one we have had. John came to our home a few times a week and spent time with my son helping him socialize in the neighborhood, complete homework and just hang out. John was a gentle and kind spirit who has left this world too soon. My sincerest condolences and prayers are with his wife, family and friends during this time.

Truly the most unique and beautiful person I have had the privilege to know. Lasting memories of leading worship barefoot and hours spent together planning for a future after high school. It was a privilege and honor to have known him. My sincerest thoughts and prayers are with the family as we grieve while also rejoicing John's coming home. Heather Petrelli

I am so sorry for your loss. I did not know John well, but I have heard many stories about the Russell family from my mother Carmela, who was college friends with Sally. Many prayers to your family during this unimaginably difficult time. May he rest in peace.
