Joseph W. Janssens Jr.

1935 - 2018

Joseph William Janssens Jr., A 56 year resident of Annapolis, MD passed away on August 8, 2018. Joe was born on May 25, 1935 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD to Joseph W Janssens, Sr. and Amy Woodruff Janssens. His father's employer, now Exxon-Mobil, required him to live within 50 miles of the Wall Street area of New York City; so Joe was raised in Northern New Jersey and graduated from Carteret Preparatory School in West Orange, New Jersey in June 1954. During his senior year at Carteret Prep, Joe was the starting guard on the school's basketball team that won the New Jersey group 4 State Basketball Championship and was invited to play in the Eastern States Championship Basketball Tournament in Glen Falls, New York. After graduating from the business school of the University of MD, College Park in 1958, he continued on to graduate from the University of MD School of Law, Baltimore in 1961. Joe married Catherine Foxcroft "Cacky" Davies on November 22, 1961. During their 57 years of marriage, Joe & Cacky raised a son, Joseph W Janssens III, a daughter Abigail Foxcroft Janssens (Shupe) and four Chesapeake Bay retrievers who hunted waterfowl with Joe at various places on the Eastern shore of Maryland. Joe practiced law for 38 years in Baltimore, MD, beginning with the firm of France & Rouzer, then with Miles & Stockbridge in Baltimore and retiring in 1999 from the Baltimore office of Ballard, Spahr, Andrews, & Ingersoll. During his time at Miles & Stockbridge, Joe was a member of the firm's managing partners committee and was the General Counsel for two of Maryland's largest commercial banks. During retirement, Joe and Cacky enjoyed traveling to France, Spain, and during the winter months to various places in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. Joe was an avid fan of University of Maryland Athletics, having football and basketball season tickets for over 50 years and being a former member of the University of Maryland Terrapin Club. Joe was also a life member of both the Maryland Club in Baltimore and the Annapolis Yacht Club, where he enjoyed dining and playing Gin Rummy. He was also a member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church. In addition to his wife, son, and daughter, Joe is survived by three grandchildren.
