His Journey's Just Begun

Don't think of William Donald Schafer
as gone away -
His journey has just begun
Life holds many facets
The Earth is only one
Just think of him as resting
From the sorrows and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days and years
Think how he must be wishing
That we could know today
How nothing but our sadness
can really pass away
And think of Schafer as living
In the hearts of those he touched
For nothing loved is ever lost-
And he was loved so much.

Lord Mayor, Maryland Governor, & Comptroller William Donald Schaefer was a friend of decades. When Mayor he phoned me, then on staff of Representative Marjorie S. Holt (R-4th Dist) re Wyman Park Public Health Hospital $45 million grant pending on Sept 30 when Reagan was President. I briefed Mrs. Holt who phoned OMB Director David Stockman. The money was releasd in minutes. Otherwise the $45 million would have reverted midnight to US Treasury. Years later, I was Military Order of World Wars General George G. Meade Chapter Commander,(1998-99). The Comoptroller was having lunch at the Meade Officers Club. I accosted him, remarking "Lord Mayor, you owe me one and asked him to join our chapter. He asked for an application form which I did with me as sponsor. Never heard from him till I saw in MOWW magazine Officers Review that he had joined our chapter as a perpetual member. It took several more years before we were able to induct him. He was a great mayor and governor. And the best state Comptroller. My wife Jennie and I tried to visit with him at Charles Towne but he was not able to accommodate us. What great statesman and WW II veteran & decent human being. His life time public service and contributions to Baltimore city and Maryland are immense and legendary. We salute him and pray for his return Home to Heaven. Farewell to thee Lord Mayor. When I first moved to Lindsay Road in 1974, I would sometimes catch a glimpse of Don passing by to visit with Hilda Mae. That prompted me to send him that first Christmas card, which progressed over time into letters, calls and visits. Don never lost that caring, genuine manner of relating with others. He truly loved the people of Baltimore, and all of Maryland.

Thank you - for rising above the politics and staying yourself. You will always be remembered. Rest in peace, my friend.

On of the things that sticks with me is when I went to Our Lady of Victory, and at the time, Mayor Schafer came to talk at the school. He told us "if the Baltimore Aquarium isn't finished on time, I am going to take a plunge into one of the tanks!" And he kept to his word. I am not big on polations, but Mr. schafer was one of the very few I have nothing but respect for. He was a role model for others to follow. he will be missed, but remembered.

April 22, 2011

Two memories of William Donald Schaefer.

Summer of 1968 or 69, I was 16 and working in a jam packed ice cream store, the then President of the City Council walked in. In my boisterous voice I asked the entire store, "Do you know who this is?" Silence! :(

Summer of 1977 or 78, at the end of Franklin Town Rd I did not know to turn East or West on Frederick Ave. When the light turned green, the car behind us honked. We gestured with our finger to the black limo behind us. The mayor was in the front passenger seat! We did a classic double take and he roared!

The mayor through out his long life always was passionate and full of energy, not concerned with himself, but with his ideas to help people. May we follow his good example with the help of G-d Almighty. RIP, Wiilie Don

My first job was in the Mayor's Office --I was 18 years old. I was a typist in the typing pool -- typing letters to constituents, etc. I had only been working a week, when the gun man came and took some people hostage and he also took the life of a councilman. I will never forget how William Donald Schaefer came in after the ordeal and try to comfort each and everyone of us -- he showed a genuine concern -- He said "How are all of my children doing -- are you all okay?" as I said I will never forget that -- I worked in his office from 1976 until the end of his term in the Governor's Office -- it was a pleasure -- I also knew Pam Kelly she was also a great lady -- I say whatever potential and call on their lives that God gave them both -- they truly fulfilled it -- What a wonderful thing to use all of the gifts that God gave them -- To God be the Glory!

April 20, 2011

When the name "William Donald Schaefer" appeared on my caller-id, my first thought was, I knew he'd call. While Mr. Schaefer was grieving the loss of Hilda Mae Snoops, I was also grieving the loss of my father. At this time in my life, Mr. Schaefer created a Leadership Program at the Comptroller's Office, and I was very honored to be selected to attend. This training led to my successful career as an IT Manager. During this time of grief, I had been strongly influenced by the 2001 Josh Groban cd which included the song "To Where You Are", which led me outside one night, to see my father's smile "beyond the distant star", letting me know that he was at last in heaven with the angels, and pain free. While missing my Dad, Mr. Schaefer, unknowingly became a father figure to me, as I attended the Leadership classes. I felt the need to let Mr. Schaefer know how he had influenced my life, by mailing him the 2001 Josh Groban cd, because the song "You're Still You" felt like a song I would sing to Mr. Schaefer, for helping me during my time of grief. Sure enough, Mr. Schaefer called me directly at home and we chatted for several minutes, which touched my heart, and I will always be grateful to Mr. Schaefer, for being my father figure. R. April 20, 2011

A man of many earned titles, I remember him prsonally and fondly as my Executive Officer when we served together in the Army Resrves before I went on active duty.in 1953. He was a Major then and retured as a Lt. Colonel. Think what you want of him, his down to earth antics and behavior but when he represented the city of Baltimore and the State of Maryland, he set the standard of what a public servent should be but rarely is and beholden to noone except the people who placed him in office. He was also a very honored brother within Freemasonry. He will always be a major part of my "treasures of remembrances"

There will never be another "YOU". I first became aware of you in 1970 when you spoke at a senior assembly at Patterson High School. I knew then that you would go far. God Bless you Mr. Schaefer...If there were a Mayor in Heaven it surely would have to be you....You will be missed..Thank you again.

April 20, 2011

Baltimore's own,and the original Donald, fit the billing of a A Man of All Seasons. He made us Bawlmar natives stop being afraid to say where our families lived and we grew up. Vision the hallmark of any leader now what more can be said about a man who had vision and the good sense to share a vision for a revived Baltimore. It was a pleasure to work for him early in my career. Though I got the eye, the "young man" "boy", "whatsa name" routine like so many others over time the prickle I felt at the time was really lessons learned on civic commitment to town, state and country. He knew as he knew himself we could and can do better. He remains a citizen of the Republic who knew service to the people, let people lead to solutions were not hollow principles. He and his generation are missing form today's political landscape but I had the good fortune to off my few talents to move his vision. Rest in good peace Mayor.

I was living in Maryland at the time he was running for Gov. There was no mud-slinging on his part. His whole campaign was, "You have seen what I did for Baltimore, if you want me to do it for the State of Maryland then vote for me."
Being able to witness the changes in the city during the time I lived there was amazing.
