William Van Heel Obituary

William Ronald Van Heel, 81, of Bel Air, Maryland passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2021. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to Catherine "Cuppy" Van Heel (nee Panozzo); devoted father of Kathryn Burke and her husband David, Kenneth Van Heel and his wife Christine, John Van Heel and his wife Linda, James Van Heel and his wife Dianne Paulus, Jennifer Miller and her husband Brett and Elisa Robertson and her husband Scott; loving brother of Laurie (Van Heel) Ruffolo and her husband Mickey; also survived by 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.

Bill graduated from Jones Commercial High School in Chicago, Illinois. He then spent his professional life as a transportation/logistics manager at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Bill's more than 36 year career moved him and his family to several locations within the company, including the Burns Harbor plant in Indiana, the central office in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the Buffalo New York plant and finally the Sparrows Point plant located near Baltimore, Maryland. Bill enjoyed golfing with friends and family, a beautiful morning fishing on a lake, working a puzzle, watching birds (and the Birds), rooting for the Ravens, and playing cards or a game of pool. He enjoyed his time with his loved ones and was so proud to welcome his first great grandson this spring.

Family and friends are invited to gather at the Schimunek Funeral Home of Bel Air, Inc. (610 W. MacPhail Road Bel Air, MD 21014) on Sunday from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. A Vigil Service will be held on Sunday from 4:30 - 5:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church (9215 Old Harford Rd. Parkville, MD 21234) at 11:00 a.m. on Monday. Interment private. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in Chicago at a later date to be announced. As an alternative to flowers, please consider a donation of money or blood to the American Red Cross. Bill benefited from the generous donations of others for years and his family is forever grateful.

Bill was a partner in our golf 4-some for about 3 years at Fox Hollow super senior league. We also had dinner twice with Bill and Cuppy as our 4-some with wives. Bill was a pleasant and fun guy to be with, and a tough competitor in golf. I shall always cherish the time I spent with Bill, and offer sincere condolences to his family.
