Richard F. Powers

Richard F. Powers Battle Creek Richard F. Powers, 77, passed away on March 10, 2011 at his home. He was born on December 16, 1933, in Battle Creek, the son of Forrest A. and Ethel Laurene (Edmonds) Powers. Richard was a graduate of Lakeview High School and after graduation began a career a Post Cereals that would span 42 years. His career at Post was briefly interrupted when he joined the United States Army. He served from July 8, 1953 to June 2, 1956. He retired from Post Cereals in 1994. While at Post Richard was very active in the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union Local #374 where he served for 22 years and was elected President. He was a member of the Post 25 year club. Richard was very active in local food bank projects and the Democratic Party on the local, state and national level. Richard was a licensed contractor and had built many homes. More recently, he enjoyed helping other Post retirees with issues related to their insurance and retirement benefits. Richard married the former Helen P. Penney in 1974. She survives him. He is survived by his children Renee' Powers, R. Steven Powers, Cindy (Carl) Burgess, David and Timothy Kornoelje, Kitty Penny and Roy Penny. He also leaves 24 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Marge (Harold) Yother and brothers Tom (Diane) Powers and Phil (Barb) Powers. He was preceded in death by his sons Scott Powers and Rex Penny, his brother Art Powers and sister Joyce Powers. Visitation will be from 4:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. Sunday and Monday at Royal Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:30a.m., Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Christ Alive Church, 8938 Bellevue Rd. memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society.
