James (Jim) Medford Starkey, Jr., 93
DOVER, DE - James (Jim) Medford Starkey, Jr. died Tuesday, June 13, 2022, at home with his daughter, Ruby.
He was born September 5, 1928, in Templeville, Maryland, to the late James Medford Starkey, Sr. and Nora Wyatt Starkey.
In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his loving, devoted wife of 70 years, Anna Mae Starkey; and his sister, Eleanor Nickerson.
He is survived by his three children, Ruby Lee Schaffer (Bill) of Dover, DE, D. Wayne Starkey (Barbara) of Milford, DE, J. Gary Starkey (Dottie), of Dover, DE; seven grandchildren, Marc Schaffer of Portland, OR, Stacy Howard of Middletown, DE, Samantha Melvin of Georgetown, DE, Kathy Herd of Milford, DE, Bobbi Jacona of Lewes, DE, Jonathan Starkey of Middletown, DE, Jimmy Starkey of Middletown, DE; 12 great grandchildren, three nieces, and five nephews; his brother, Wyatt Starkey (Pat) of Sudlersville, MD; and his sister, Joyce Hurley (Bill) of Chestertown, MD.
Mr. Starkey worked for A&P after leaving his parent's farm, but for the majority of his career he was a milkman for Sealtest, Lehigh Valley, and Green Springs. Following his retirement from the milk business, he was a school bus driver for 12 years with Hilton Bus Company. He was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church where he ushered and sang duets with his daughter. He loved baseball, played second base, and was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox. Mr. Starkey was a beloved Little League coach to many young boys in the Dover area. He loved beagles and rabbit hunting, especially with his close friend Gilbert Hutchins, and transferred that enjoyable pastime on to his two sons, Wayne and Gary. He loved spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren who equally loved spending time with him. As his oldest grandson, Marc, stated, "Pop-Pop was accepting, understanding, kind, nurturing, and a family man who truly listened and cared for others. He always had an uplifting word and optimistic outlook…a dependable, sincere man with integrity."
Services will be held 12 p.m., Monday, June 20, 2022, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 209 S. State Street, Dover, Delaware. Friends may visit one hour prior. Interment will be held at Sharon Hills Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 209 S. State Street, Dover, Delaware.
