David Woltering Obituary

David Woltering
February 4, 1946 - January 11, 2023
Belleville, Illinois - David F. Woltering, born to Francis and Irene (Schrage) Woltering on February 4, 1946, died on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, from complications of Parkinson's Disease.
David grew up in St. Rose, IL and attended Mater Dei High School in Breese, IL. After graduating from St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, IN, he married Lena (Robke) Woltering on June 15, 1968, at St. Boniface Church in Germantown, IL.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Eileen (Woltering) Hoffman, and his son Jake Woltering. He is survived by his wife; two children, Ben (Jennifer) Woltering of Wesley Chapel, FL, and Cate (Joe) Rousseau of University City, MO; daughter-in-law Amy Woltering of Craig, CO; four grandchildren, Abigail Woltering (Fiancé Kurk Anton), Ariana Fallon, Blake Rousseau and Elsie Rousseau; four sisters Ruth (Tom) Kueper, Connie (Rick) Fangmeyer, Edie (Bill) Koch, and Jan (Joe) Humphrey; and many nieces and nephews.
David began his 40+ year accounting career at Arthur Anderson in St. Louis, MO and ended it as Chief Financial Officer for Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, in Ft. Wayne, IN. His work took him across the country and included many trips to Europe.
David's intense work ethic and generous spirit led him to continue working in the community after retirement, which included many years at MindsEye Radio in Belleville, IL, where he volunteered his time translating text to audio for people with visual impairment.
Throughout his life, David thoroughly enjoyed sports. He played high school baseball and later played on various softball teams. Approximately 35 years ago, he became immersed (some might say obsessed) with the game of tennis and played on USTA teams and in various local leagues. He was an avid Cardinals fan and enjoyed going to games at Busch Stadium and following them on TV. His other hobbies included reading and playing games: Euchre, Words with Friends, Sudoku, and, most recently, Farkle, to name a few.
For many years, David participated in Rock Steady Boxing, a one-of-a-kind gym experience which addresses the quality of life needs of people living with Parkinson's. He lived with the disease for nearly 20 years and felt compelled to become involved in research studies. Over the years he donated time and money to The Michael J. Fox Foundation and for the past 10 years was part of the Washington University Parkinson's Research Program. His ultimate gift to the cause was donating his body to Washington University Medical School, with his brain going specifically to Dr. Joel S. Perlmutter's Parkinson's Study.
In lieu of flowers, the family will be accepting contributions that will be sent to Dr. Perlmutter (please make checks payable to Washington University, with a notation in the memo field "for Dr. Perlmutter's Parkinson's research").
David made it clear that being present for his children and grandchildren was his main goal, and it motivated him to keep up the fight for as long as he did.
A gathering will be held on his birthday, February 4, 2023 at St. Teresa's Parish Center, 1108 Lebanon Avenue, Belleville, IL. Family will be welcoming visitors from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a celebration of life service immediately following.

Lena,
Wish I could have been there for you at St. Teresa's but we are in Salem, Oregon temporarily. Sending warm hugs across space to you and your family. His obit described an extraordinary man. So sorry he and you had to suffer so with Parkinsons. My brother, Tom, and mother-in-law, LaGarda, suffered and died with Parkinson. I still recall with fondness how kind you and your family were to me and my family, and , as I remember David too, following Barb's death. Please be assured of my thoughts and prayers.

Peace and Hope,
Pete Cerneka

After reading the Obituary, we were impressed by his life work both professionally and in other interests. Impressed by his donation of his time to improve the life of visually impaired and his contribution to the study of Parkinson´s disease! Although we didn´t know Dave and his family, we´re good friends with Jan and Joe and some of his other sisters. Finally, please accept our sincere condolences for the loss of Dave.
