Obituary published on Legacy.com by Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home - Louisville on Feb. 10, 2026.
Raymond Joseph Gapen, lovingly known as "Ray," peacefully entered the gates of Heaven on February 3, 2026, surrounded by his beloved family, after a wonderful life lived fully and faithfully.
Ray was born in
Chicago, IL, moved to Indianapolis shortly after, and was a proud Cathedral High School graduate who lettered in baseball and football. He continued his education at St. Joseph's College,
Rensselaer, IN to play football, then attended Indiana University. He also served in the Army Reserves. After several corporate moves, The Gapen Family established roots in
Louisville, Kentucky in 1988. He was the strongest, most resilient, and tender man we have ever known. His kindness and gentle spirit were matched only by his grit, determination, and unwavering belief to "just get it done," as he so often said. A servant leader in both his career and his family life, Ray humbly led by example - never asking anyone to do something he wouldn't do himself.
For 58 years, Ray shared a beautiful life with his wife, Vicky. Together, they raised three children – Jeff Gapen (Karen), Michael Gapen (Alison), and Jennifer Harris (Todd) - shaping them into who they are today and inspiring them to live like he did to carry out his legacy. Ray's goals in life were simple and steadfast: to provide for his family and to be present with them. He loved his family unconditionally, and his life was a testament to that love.
Ray found joy in life's simple pleasures - time with family and friends, grilling, playing with the dogs, and watching a ball game. Nothing, however, brought him more happiness than being "Pops" to his cherished grandchildren: Jack, Will, Sam, Leighton, Whitley, Connor, and Clay.
In addition to his immediate family, Ray is survived by his siblings and their beautiful families: Mick Gapen (Jackie), Debbie DuBois (Marck), and Barbara Parsons (Rex). He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Edna Gapen, and his sister, Marilyn Trownsell (Bill) and brother-in-law, Rex Parsons (Barbara)..
Ray's legacy is one of love, service, faith, and family - a life well lived and deeply treasured.
