Robert Jennings Obituary

Robert Jennings

Attorney Robert L. Jennings, 81, of Belleville, Ill., born Sept. 29, 1932, in New Baden, Ill., died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Belleville, Ill.

Mr. Jennings was a prominent attorney in Belleville for more than 50 years. He became assistant state's attorney in 1964, and in 1965 he began eight years as city attorney for Belleville, Ill. He was recently honored as a 50-year member of the Illinois Bar Association.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., and was very involved with the Catholic Diocese of Belleville, as well as many Baptist churches in the area. Prior to meeting his wife, Dolores, he was studying to become a Baptist minister. He preached his first sermon at the First Baptist Church on Jackson Street in Belleville, Ill. Once he met Dolores, the love of his life, he began studying to become Catholic.

Robert had graduated from Belleville Township High School in 1950. He spent eight years earning his law degree at night school at Saint Louis University. During his college years, he worked at the Wabash Railroad as an office assistant.

Robert served in the U.S. Army artillery in Korea near the end of the Korean War. During his time in the military, he was a personal cook for a general.

Robert was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He was a talented woodcarver and was a member of the Belleville Area Holzschnitzers Club, a hobby he enjoyed for many years. He enjoyed horseback riding, farming on the weekends for relaxation, and playing music with his friends. Bob enjoyed playing the guitar, the banjo, and the fiddle with friends every Friday night in the living room of his home. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, farming, boating, and motorcycle riding. He was a member of the Shriners, the Masons, and the Knights of Columbus. For many years he was involved with the annual Shriners' Parade in Belleville.

Bob enjoyed all the time he spent with his family, especially during the many summer vacations he planned for them. Because of his cooking skills obtained in the military, he was famous for making the best holiday meals, the Sunday morning big breakfast for his kids, and every Sunday dinner.

Those who knew Bob felt his willingness to give of himself to improve others' lives. He was very involved with charities in the area and used to say that he would only retire from being an attorney when he no longer would be helping people.

Bob enjoyed people. He always enjoyed the homemade cakes from Straightway Baptist Church or the occasional apple pie from a client. He had a habit of helping people just because they asked. He was a kind-hearted man who would do anything for anybody.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Dolores, nee Lercher, Jennings, whom he married on July 10, 1954, and who died on March 31, 2008; a son, Daniel G. Jennings; a son in infancy, Christopher M. Jennings; and his parents, Ernest P. and Margaret C., nee Guymon, Jennings.

Surviving are three daughters and a son, Angela M. (David) Fellner and John P. Jennings, both of Belleville, Ill., Judith A. Jennings (Tim Volluz) of O'Fallon, Ill., and Mary M. (Lloyd) Volluz of Highland, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, to St. Henry's Catholic Church, or to the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

So sorry to hear of the loss of your dad. I remember him coming to your grandparents house next door to us growing up. All of you are in my prayers. We lost dad a while back but mom is still here.

Sorry to hear of you lost. Bob did some legal work for me about 20 years ago and a few years later for one of my brothers. It was a totally enjoyable experience rather then anything negative. In later years I would see him here and there and always we talked and I considered him a friend. Sorry I missed the obituary in the paper and the funeral.

An institution has passed on to glory. Art and I will truly miss Bob. We enjoyed many music sessions with him. He was also very generous with his time and energy. He helped us several times with legal problems and was always there for us. Our deepest sympathy goes to Angie, John, Judy, and Mary, and all of the families. Art and I were reminiscing about Bob's personality, I think Bob was like Teddy Roosevelt; "He walked softly and carried a big stick". God bless you as you celebrate Bob's life.

To the Family of Robert Jennings:
You will never know in your lifetime what your father meant to me and my family. He was our family's attorney for over 50+ years. He and my father were both ushers at St. Teresa Church in the 60's. He was advisor and legal counsel for my business, our private hunt club and handled the sale of our 130 year old family farm in Mascoutah - intra family.
If there was a domestic or business crisis on the horizon, he was the go to person for the entire family. He managed to calm the seas and pave the rocky road for me many times over the last 20 years. He was an incredibly gifted person in so many areas from nature, to music to business. His passing will leave a cavity for me that cannot be filled. I conversed with him weekly.
When my dad passed away, he become my go to person for advise and strength. When it came to the family, he was always there for me. Your father was and always will be one of my favorite people in life. He had one passion and that was to help or benefit you in anyway he could. He loved my Mother's apple pies and she enjoyed baking them for him even at age 95.
Please accept my deepest sympathy on your family's loss.
Your father was a very rare gem, incredible and irreplaceable. I would guess that he and my father are together in heaven today hugging one another.
Love always,
Jim, Jane & Lisa Pauley
The entire Pauley Family

Bob was our friend and lawyer for the past 27 years. (Mother's lawyer twenty years before that) He was one special guy; knowledgable, talented, always supportive and especially kind. Our lives were richer for having known him. Our sympathy to the family. It was obvious to us how much he loved you all and was very proud of you, too. May memories of your Dad, Granddad and Great Granddad help you through this difficult time.

My father Frank Moore and Bob were friends for many many years. Their love of violins brought them together. Their musical moments at Bob's house were good times for both dad and my mother. Even when dad had to leave Belleville and move to Missouri, they kept in touch and still played music together at the Nelsons home. He will be deeply missed by dad and his family. God Bless and say hello to mom and Dolores for us.

I was introduced to Bob when I was 18. My brother and I started our auction service and needed an attorney, Bob was then serving the Millstadt community through the FNB of Millstadt. Bob was very helpful in getting us started in the right direction.Over the last 32 years I obtained enough knowledge from Bob that he paid me one of the best compliments he could have ever given me he said Schaller your starting to scare me "the student has become as smart as the teacher" .Bob I will miss you more than you could ever know. You were more than just a friend. I will miss our BS sessions.Rest in peace my friend.
