Viola Bailey

Viola C. "Vi" Bailey, nee Brendel, 70, currently resided at Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville, Ill., and previously at Grand Manor in Swansea, Ill., born Nov. 2, 1940, in Albers, Ill., passed away on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Ill.

After 28 years, Vi retired on June 1, 2006, from the housekeeping department at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville, Ill. She loved music, dancing, cooking, traveling and dressing up for every holiday on the calendar, which she was famous for at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

Vi was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Bailey, whom she married on Nov. 30, 1981, and who died on Jan. 23, 1994; parents, Vincent and Vera, nee Hilmes, Brendel; brother-in-law, Bill Lawrence; and step son-in-law, Wayne Mills.

Surviving are her sister, Nancy (Gerry) Eversgerd of Edwardsville, Ill., brothers, Mel Brendel of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Vern (Jackie) Brendel of Dolan Springs, Ariz.; step daughters, Cindy Mills and Sara (Curt) Spence; step grandchildren, Barry (Stephanie) Mills, Karis and Carrie Spence; sister-in-law, Dorothy Lawrence; nephews, Eric (Holly) Eversgerd of Phoenix, Ariz., Jayson (Daniela) of Recife, Brazil, Glen Brendel, Lance and Matthew Brendel; nieces, Sherry Brendel, Michele Karraker and Lisa Brendel; great-niece, Sofia Eversgerd; great-nephews, Antonio and Daniel Eversgerd; aunts, Loretta Zurliene, Catherine Strieker and Theresa Markus; also, survived by a host of other relatives, family and friends, especially those at St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Vi's honor may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois, the American Diabetes Association or to a charity of one's choice. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.valhallagardensandfuneralhome.com.

Visitation: Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill.

Funeral: Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Steve Phillips of Winstanley Baptist Church officiating. Interment in Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville, Ill.
