Kjysten Drew Obituary

The Owl Lady has flown. Kjysten (Kitty) Weppener Drew. 2-21-1943, 8-18-2016. After a short illness, in Ferndale, Washington. Born to Carl and Barbara Anderson Weppener in San Jose, CA and grew up on their ranch in Corral de Tierra, Graduated from Salinas High School in 1959 and from San Jose State College in 1965 with great distinction. She taught Gifted students at Mission Park School and English, Journalism and Gifted and Talented Education at Washington Middle School. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Charles of Ferndale, daughters; Ulrike of Ferndale, Melissa of San Antonio, Texas and grand children Joshua and Austen. She had a lifetime devotion to teaching. Her students called her daring, caring, devoted, unconventional, supportive and just a bit crazy. She was an active member of the Pebble Beach Sports Car Club and enjoyed rallying and auto crossing in her bright purple Bug Eye Sprite. She was a talented spinner and weaver. While attending Hartnell, she was active in the Little Theater. The highlight of her stage appearances was playing Joan of Arc in "THE LARK". She was also active in the Cheyenne, Wyoming Little Theater Group. As she wished, no services are planned. I am so sorry to hear of Kitty's passing. I remember her well from the Pebble Beach Sports Car Club, and the two wolves she and Chuck had for educational purposes.
Kitty was such a sparkling ray of sunshine.

Oh, my. My friend and I were just recollecting the joy that Kitty Drew brought us in elementary school at San Benancio and Washington Union. After our conversation I had to search for her online and am so saddened to read this obituary. God bless Kitty Drew for the fun and memories she made for so many Corral de Tierra kids!

Still in my thoughts...her loss to this world that she made so magical by her presence.
When I weave...it is through her memory spinning moments shared years ago and through the friendship renewed. She was my distant mentor and champion for our shared Nordic past.
May each moment of memory of her love with you and the family be a sweet one.

Dear Chuck and Family,

I was deeply affected when I found this on the internet. Hard to believe that Wildwood AFS was 50 years ago. I fondly remember nights at the Officers Club and, especially, our trip down to Seward Days, stopping to grill steak along the way.

Kitty was a good friend and ready to help out any and all.

My deep sympathy to all of you.

Although we've lost touch since Hartnell, I remember Kitty when we were writing for 'The Seed' and doing other activities, and on the bus...she was dynamic and smart and fun...what a lady! My deep condolences to you and to your family, Chuck...

Dear Chuck and girls,

My deepest sympathy. I am so sorry for your loss.
You were such special people to my husband Bob, and I am so appreciative of the scholarship you set up in his memory. Good news--it is still going strong.
Kitty would appear on my Facebook page occasionally because of our having a friend in common and I had been thinking of trying to contact her.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

It's really quite an unfortunate coincidence that I discovered Mrs. Drew just passed. I went to my daughter's Back-to-School night tonight and it got me thinking about the great teachers I've had and how all teachers have such an indelible impact. More than just "liking" a teacher, I asked myself, "Who was the best educator?" I immediately thought of Kitty Drew. I had the pleasure of being Mrs. Drew's student in GATE English at (then) Washington Junior High.

She challenged everyone to become exponentially better writers. She seemed to know how to motivate everyone -- the social butterflies, the perfectionists, the shy, those overly confident or who lacked all confidence, and even those who pushed against authority. She brought out the best in her students. The crazy thing is that I'm certain that I wasn't one of her favorite students and yet the impression she made on me was if I had been.

I'm 43 now with a family and honestly had not spoken to Mrs. Drew since I was 14. I hope you can understand the true positive impact of a person like her. That was almost 30 years ago, but I just googled her name as a "Where are the now?" homage.

Kitty Drew was a wonderful teaching colleague with a great sense of humor and a unbreakable spirit. We worked together (many times at her house) on curriculum upgrades for English teachers. She had a mesmerizing way of sharing what was interesting and yet challenging; her lesson plans on John Steinbeck's stories benefited hundreds of students. Kitty was never afraid to speak out even if that meant opposing authority figures. I am proud to call her my friend.

Kitty and Charley have been our dear friends since the 1970's. We traveled together, went wine tasting together, exchanged books, had arguments, had dinner together at each other's homes on a weekly basis, and, when it came time for me to retire and leave Salinas, they put me up in their home, while my wife, Ellen, stayed with her parents and I finished my time in the Police Department. Ellen and I even served as Riki and Missy's godparents. Kitty, we'll miss you tremendously. You added much to our lives, and made things interesting, but now you no longer hurt. You beat breast cancer and any number of problems and conditions, and now you can rest. I wonder where we'll find someone with your raucous (to say the least) sense of humor and intelligence to talk to. Probably nowhere. Rest easy, Madame Drew. You certainly left a positive mark on this planet.

Kitty was a special person to me and I enjoyed working with her at the Fair, Youth Science Center and hearing her stories about her hummingbirds, etc. Her weaving was beautiful
