Deborah R. Shay

1953 - 2014 WILLIAMSTOWN Deborah Ruth Shay was born at Fort Benning, Ga., on May 7, 1953. Her father was in Officers Candidate School at the time. She was born into a service family and her mother had been an army nurse during World War II. After she received a degree in Social Work at Smith College, she worked at her profession in Boston and on the Cape. After her father retired, her parents moved to this area and she briefly lived close by them in North Adams. She died suddenly on March 5, 2014, in Boston. Her lifelong companion, Jane Bullowa, predeceased her by a few months. She is survived by her father, Lt. Colonel Ruben William Shay of Williamstown, and three brothers, David Gray of Whidbey Island, Wash., Michael Shay of Rochester, Vt., and Bruce Shay of Pomfret, Conn. Her memorial service will be private.
