Gladys LaGrant Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Gladys LaGrant, on Saturday, April 16 at Lee Healthcare.

She was the daughter of Hugh L. and Effie Stowell Tenney, and was born in Glendale, MA on August 12, 1919 and was one of 9 children. Mrs. LaGrant graduated from the former Williams High School in Stockbridge with a Business education. She married Fred Ray LaGrant in 1939 and worked with her husband in Southern Berkshire Welding taking care of the bookkeeping for many years. Together they built the Pilgrim Motel which Gladys managed. She enjoyed baking for family and friends, attending sporting events of her grandchildren and neighbor's children and was always available for a game of ball in her yard. Many still stopped by to say Hello and reminisce about the good times they had. In the winter it was the Ski Doo trips to the Camp on the mountain that Gladys loved with family and friends.

Gladys is survived by two daughters: Jeanne M. Brown (her faithful caregiver) and Elaine Guachione Matthew of Lee; a son: Fred W. La Grant of Pittsfield; five grandchildren: James J. Guachione (Amy), Paul Brown (Susie), Jeff Brown (Lisa), Jessie Mooney and Shane La Grant; three great grandchildren: Gina Guachione, Samantha Brown and Abigail Brown; one brother: Herbert G. Tenney. Gladys was predeceased by her husband Fred in 1991 and grandsons John R. Guachione in 2004 and Bryant LaGrant in 2021 also brothers: Charles, Ralph, Raymond, Robert, and Donald Tenney and a sister Grace Pixley.

At Gladys' request there will be no calling hours or services. She will be buried with her husband at a later date. If you would like to make a donation in her memory, please do so to Lee High Gridiron, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or Hospice Care in the Berkshires, in care of Kelly Funeral Home 3 Main Street, Lee, MA 01238.

I was so sad to hear this news. Mrs LaGrant was the kindest, funniest and most graceful lady I had the pleasure of knowing. She always had a smile and warm welcome whenever I visited and her letters were always filled with joy! You were blessed to have her in your lives for so long and May her smiles and the memories live on in your hearts. Sending love and sympathy to you all.

My deepest condolences to all. I had the pleasure to work for Mrs. LaGrant at the Pilgrim Motel in the late 60´s while in I was high school. I especially remember that when I worked at the desk on Sundays, Mrs. LaGrant would often stop at Friendly´s and buy me a Swiss Chocolate Ice cream Sundae. She always had a smile.

Jeanne, Jim, and all of the family....Gladys was my next door neighbor for over twenty years. Covid restrictions kept me from visiting her before I left the Berkshires in 2021, but I think of her often and our frequent visits when I sat for hours listening to her joyful stories of her adventures with her -then- young family and marriage and the wonderful snowrides together at the campsite.
Gladys will live in my heart forever, as I know she touched everyone else's heart. You are very lucky to have had her so long - as I was to have my mom. Thank you for sharing her with me. I will keep her in my prayers. Wenda Ramos
