Judith Stein Obituary

Judith Stein

1919 - 2014 PITTSFIELD Judith Stein, 95, formerly of Pittsfield, died on June 24, 2014, at the Pine Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Philmont, N.Y. Judy was born on Jan. 17, 1919, in New York City, the youngest of three children of Harry and Mildred Moskowitz. Growing up in Far Rockaway, Queens, Judy fondly spent many of her summer days swimming and sunning at the beach. She graduated from Far Rockaway High School in 1935 and from Hunter College in 1939, where she majored in social work. Judy worked as a Child Welfare Caseworker in New York City and in 1945, married Paul Stein, whom she met while vacationing at the now long closed, Chester's Zunbarg resort in the Catskills. Paul and Judy had two sons, and the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and later to Geneseo, N.Y. Judy worked in many social work capacities and served as the Child Welfare Case Supervisor for the Livingston County Department of Social Services. Upon retirement Paul and Judy moved to Pittsfield, where they started an antique business and spent several years traveling around the country buying and selling American art glass and pottery and treasuring each other's company. They were also active in community and cultural activities, including as founding members of the Berkshire Institute for Lifelong Learning (now the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Berkshire Community College) and at Temple Anshe Amunim in Pittsfield. Judy and Paul spent their last years together living at Devonshire Estates in Lenox. After her beloved husband of nearly 65 years died, Judy moved to The Home For the Aged in Hudson, N.Y. She lived there for two and a half years, cared for by an attentive and kind staff, and enjoying the fellowship of the other residents. Judy moved to Pine Haven in January of this year and continued to benefit from the dedicated care of a compassionate staff, committed to the well-being of those in their care. In addition to her husband, Judy was predeceased by her dear silbings, Ruth and Herb. She is survived by her loving sons, Bill, and his wife Susan Chandler, of Montclair, N.J., and Dan, and his wife Marie, of West Ghent, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Ben (JoAnna), Kate, Clare, and Alex, and her great-grandchildren, Eddie, Anabel, Lily, and Josie, as well as her niece, Bobbi Sobel and nephew, Dick Schwartz. Her beauty, intelligence, keen wit and love inspired us and will continue to guide us in the future.
