Louis J. Carmel

1926 - 2023

Louis J. Carmel, 96, of Hinsdale, Massachusetts passed away peacefully to be with the Lord and our Mom, on January 29, 2023.

Dad was born November 18, 1926. He was the son of Earl & Ruth Sherman Carmel. Dad was the middle boy of 3 sons and was raised in Hinsdale and went on to build his home and remain in Hinsdale his entire life. He married our Mom, Pauline Mongue, on July 29, 1950 and went on to raise 3 children.

Dad worked at General Electric for 44 years as a toolmaker beginning at the ripe old age of 16. When he turned 18 he was deployed to South Pacific, to serve in WWII. When he was discharged, he went back to GE where he worked till his FIRST retirement. He didn't retire long before he started to pick up jobs here and there, till he eventually wound up working his summers at the Stockbridge Golf Course. Dad kept the fairways on the course pristine driving his John Deere tractor each morning at 5am. Dad worked this job for 18 years and finally retired at 88 years of age.

Dad was an active member of his town. He was a Town selectman, Head of sewer committee, and Town Inspector for many years.

But the one thing in life Dad loved the most was being a serious outdoorsman. He loved hunting, trapping and fishing. He went on many deer hunting expeditions to Maine and most recently in the last few years he went to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where he would always come home with his pictures and horns, evidence of the BIG DEER he harvested. When not hunting, you could find Dad following the Boston Red Sox on TV. He did not miss a game!

Dad is survived by his two daughters, Diane (Carmel) Sherman of Pittsfield, Joann Farrell and her husband Kevin of Dalton, and his son Edward Carmel of Pittsfield: grandchildren, Damian Sherman, Brittany, Ryan (Chelsie) and Brandon Farrell (Michelle), Sara & Pauline Carmel, James & Katelyn Scace.

He was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Pauline, his parents, as well as his two brothers, Earl Jr. & Norman Carmel.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Louis Carmel will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 6 p.m. at DERY-FOLEY Funeral Home, 890 E. Main St, Dalton, celebrated by Rev. Christopher Malatesta, Pastor of St. Agnes. Calling hours will precede the service from 4pm to 6pm.
