Carl Gwynn Obituary

CLARKSTON, Wash. - Carl Edwin Gwynn, of Clarkston, passed away Friday, June 4, 2004, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Idaho. Carl successfully fought heart disease for more than 30 years, but lost a short battle with cancer.
He was born Aug. 31, 1928, in Wichita, Kan., to Prince Llewlyn Gwynn and Lucile Doughty Gwynn. Carl attended school in Greenwood County, Kan., and Lucerne and Grass Creek, Wyo., and high school in Thermopolis, Wyo. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1946 and was discharged in 1948. He began working for the Santa Fe Railway in 1948 and the same year, married Ruth Wright of Wellington, Kan.
Carl relocated to Big Timber, Mont., where he joined his father on his ranch in 1950. He farmed in Roberts, Mont., and when Carl and Ruth's daughters reached school age, they relocated to Billings, where Carl worked for the Northern Pacific Railway and Yellowstone Paper Co. until 1959, when he purchased the Harlo Freight Line from his father. Carl relocated to Lewiston, Idaho, where he worked for Lewis-Clark State College. He started his career with the Bureau of Reclamation in 1966.
Ruth passed away in 1973.
While living in the Boise area, he married Jean Daley Keeler in 1973. They relocated to Coulee Dam, where they lived until they moved to Clarkston in 2003. Carl retired in 1989 as a property management officer.
Carl's favorite hobbies were genealogy and square dancing. He compiled and published two family history books and was very proud of his Welsh ancestry.
He belonged to many organizations, including Square Wheelers International (square dance club) and was a past commodore of the Grand Coulee Dam Yacht Club. He was a lifetime member of the Elks and was a charter member of several square and round dance clubs in the Boise area while living there.
Survivors include his wife, Jean of Clarkston; daughters Karen Andre and Thomas, and Carla Stadtmiller and Lee, all of Billings, and Diane Gwynn-Sanders and David of Bellevue; grandson Matthew Andre and Tara of Billings; granddaughter Kracinda Mead and Phillip of Kirkland, and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers James Leroy, Robert Wayne and Ray Neil; sister Alma Louise Gwynn; wife Ruth; two sons, Ronald and Donald; and daughter Cheryl Ruth.
Cremation has taken place. Placement of the remains will be in the Gwynn family plot, Monument Hill Cemetery, Thermopolis, at a later time.
No service is planned, per Carl's wishes.
