Services for Joseph Running Hawk, 53, Bullhead, S.D., will be held at 1 p.m. CST Monday, Nov. 5, at Rock Creek School Gym, Bullhead. Burial will follow at St. John's Episcopal Cemetery, Bullhead, under the direction of Stout Family Funeral Home, Mobridge, S.D. Meet at the hill above Bullhead at 5:45 p.m. Sunday to process to the gym for an all-night wake with services beginning at 7 p.m. Joseph entered the spirit world Oct. 29, 2012.
Joseph Emery Running Hawk was born Aug. 29, 1959, in Fort Yates, to Ambrose L. and Emily (Leaf) Running Hawk. He was raised and educated in Bullhead, attending Bullhead Day School. He attended McIntosh High School, he graduated in 1978. He excelled in sports, playing basketball, football and softball, but enjoyed basketball the most. His jersey numbers were No. 14 and No. 15.
Joe, or Joe Pig, as he was affectionately known, lived in Bullhead the rest of his life. He worked on and off as a laborer in various fields and was also on several boards. He served on the Standing Rock Housing Board, the EPA Board and the Rock Creek School Board. Joe enjoyed hanging out with his friends and buddies, but also loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved to play marble board games and also became quite good at making the aggravation game boards. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Laurie Jo Running Hawk, Schalemar Flying Horse, Amber Hawk Bear, Emily Running Hawk and Jacque Thompson; his special friend of 11 years, Jonelle Red Bear; his grandchildren, Kylen, Zavier, Kruz and Kodi Running Hawk, Mercedes Chase, Melyssa Hawk Bear, Miranda Dubray, Hunny and Harley Running Hawk, Tatum Fischer and two more on the way; his sister, Edith Running Hawk; and brother, Leon Running Hawk.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Ambrose and Emily Running Hawk; his brothers, John Running Hawk Sr., Benny Foote, Robert Foote Sr., and Eugene Leaf Sr.; his niece, Misty Running Hawk; his nephew, Robert Foote Jr.; his aunts, Sophie (Running Hawk) Archambault, Mary Yellow Earrings, Jenny Running Hawk and Josephine Hollow; and grandchildren, Torrey Rosebud and Easton White Eagle.
