FARGO - Stephen Eugene "Gene" Devine, 74, Fargo, died Sept. 15, 2014, at Essentia Health, Fargo. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Sts. Ann and Joachim Catholic Church, Fargo.
There will be a prayer service held at 7 p.m. today at Sts. Ann and Joachim Catholic Church.
Stephen Eugene Devine, the son of Gervase and Eunice (Foerster) Devine, was born Jan. 29, 1940, in Grand Forks. At the age of 7, he moved with his family to Manvel. He grew up there and graduated from Manvel High School as valedictorian.
His first job was delivering water for his father's company, Devine's Water Hauling. He later worked for Walt Orchard Oil Company and then for Coca-Cola in Grand Forks. Gene worked as a Highway Patrol officer for the state of North Dakota for four years stationed in Parshall, and then in Fargo. After leaving the Highway Patrol, he began working for American Family Insurance in Fargo as a claims manager. He retired after 35 years. He married Elizabeth Jeanne (Kreitel) Werner, May 7, 1988, in Grand Forks.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; two daughters, Teresa Backer, Minneapolis, and Stephanie Phillips, Fargo; a stepson, James (Shelley) Werner, Bismarck; two grandchildren and six step-grandchildren; four brothers, Gerald (Donna) Devine, Grand Forks, James (Joanne) Devine, Seattle, Wash., Howard (Connie) Devine, Manvel, and Hugh Devine, Grand Forks; and four sisters, Veronica (Roger) Stadstad, Manvel, Darlene (Roger) Hoverson, Grand Forks, Colleen (Darryle) Hendrickson, Manvel, and Phyllis (Dennis) Wisk, Buckley, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gervase and Eunice Devine; one brother, Garrett; one granddaughter, Skylar Dahlgren; one stepson, Mark Werner; and one step-grandson, Blake Werner.
